Heavy rains cause flooding throughout state

A Labor Day weekend storm deluged parts of the state with as much as 9 inches of rain and sent many residents running to sandbags still wet from earlier summer floods. A driver who was swept away in floodwaters was missing and feared dead.

Taliban gaining ground

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- The Taliban are no longer on the run and have teamed up with al Qaeda once again, according to officials and former Taliban who say the religious militia has reorganized and strengthened since their defeat at the hands of the U.S.-led coalition nearly two years ago.

Shedding new light on August blackout

On Aug. 14, the largest blackout in American history darkened homes in scattered areas across eight U.S. states and parts of eastern Canada. Tens of millions of people, including some IU students, were left without power for nearly two days.

Cat Stevens' dream a reality in Bloomington

An Islamic school in Bloomington is ahead of a former pop star's dream to open religious schools in American Muslim communities. Cat Stevens, who converted to Islam in 1977 and now calls himself Yusuf Islam, urged Muslim communities Sunday to open religious-based schools. Stevens opened one of the first Islamic schools in London in 1983.

New Women's Affairs dean

Chinese military to shed 200,000 troops

BEIJING -- The world's largest military is getting a little smaller. Monday, China announced plans to cut 200,000 more soldiers as part of efforts to modernize its armed forces -- cuts that come on top of a 500,000-man reduction in the five years ending in 2000. e cuts will coincide with the introduction of more high-tech battle systems, Jiang Zemin, military commission chief and retired president, was quoted saying by state television and the official Xinhua News Agency.

IUPD welcomes cadets to the force

Finally, it was over. After 16 weeks of endless push-ups, junior Brett Rorem was ready to graduate. Rorem forgot to put his name on a test one day; his superior officer helped him count out 20 push-ups. He had to do 20 push-ups if he fell behind in the weekly run and 10 at the end of every day, along with the rest of the cadets.

Diversity presentation continues to educate

Rain dampens first day of class for IU students

Labor Day, torrential rains and the jitters of the first day of classes. Those were the subject of grumblings heard from students huddled in door frames and doubled up under umbrellas Monday while 1.5 inches of rain fell on Bloomington, interrupting classes and forcing students to run for cover. Senior Amy Fischer, who was leaving the Indiana Memorial Union during spurts of rainfall, said she thought the rain was refreshing.

Bloomington awaits arrival of Dalai Lama

The 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, Tenzin Gyatso, will make a much-anticipated appearance in Bloomington this weekend to dedicate a new interfaith temple at the Tibetan Cultural Center. The visit comes at the tail end of Spirit of Tibet Week, an annual celebration offering discussions, lectures, Tibetan films and musical performances to the community.

WASHINGTON -- America's consumers, aided by tax cuts that left them with extra cash, ratcheted up their spending in July by the largest amount in four months, a strong signal the economy is gaining momentum. The Commerce Department reported Friday that consumer spending increased by 0.8 percent in July, on top of a brisk 0.6 percent rise the month before.
