Hoosiers head to Iowa to face top 10 teams

The IU women's field hockey team heads to Iowa City, Iowa, this weekend to face off against No. 9 Iowa and No. 1 Wake Forest. The Hoosiers (7-8, 0-5 Big Ten) will look for their first conference win of the season in their last Big Ten game against the Hawkeyes.

Hoosiers lose to rival Kentucky

IU evened up its record at 1-1 last night when the No. 21 men's swimming and diving team lost to Kentucky 119-112 in Lexington.

Fall season wraps up in N.C.

The IU women's golf team will conclude its fall season this weekend at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. The Country Club of Landfall, designed by Jack Nicklaus, will serve as host for the event. The tournament will consist of three rounds beginning Friday morning.

Runners travel north

Organ performance makes Halloween 'Spooktacular'

A few IU students are pulling out all the stops this Halloween -- literally. Today will mark the fourth year anniversary for the Pipes Spooktacular -- an organ concert co-sponsored by the IU School of Music organ department and the Bloomington chapter of American Guild of Organists.

Team looks to end slump

Red-hot IU to face Kentucky

IU seeks to extend its season-high, seven-game win streak and 20-game home unbeaten streak when it welcomes border rival Kentucky Sunday for a third consecutive non-conference match. The red-hot Hoosiers, now No. 14 in the latest NSCAA/adidas poll, finished 6-0-1 in October, a month they began unranked and with the program's worst record after nine games. IU (9-3-4, 4-0-1) has posted shutouts in five of its last six games and has outscored its opponents 16-2 during the seven-game win streak.

We're finally ranked: No. 8

This is a disgrace. Saturday's game pits two nationally-ranked teams -- No. 19 Minnesota vs. No. 8 IU -- and is not being shown on television. Of course, Minnesota is ranked 19th in the ESPN Coaches' Poll, and IU is ranked 8th in the ESPN.com Bottom 10 (with first being the worst).

Former students testify in Wells trial

Two IU graduates who witnessed the arrest of Monroe County Councilman Scott Wells took the stand at his trial Thursday and refuted the state police account of the incident. Wells, a Democrat, has insisted since his arrest he was set up and assaulted by state police in a politically-motivated scheme.

Brehm takes senior adviser position

IU President Adam Herbert said he expects to appoint an interim chancellor for the Bloomington campus in the next two to three weeks to replace resigning IU-Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Brehm. The interim chancellor will take office Jan. 1 and will likely hold the position for about 18 months while a committee searches for a permanent replacement, said IU spokesman Bill Stephan.

Brehm to fill new position as senior adviser to Herbert, continue as psychology professor

IU-Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Brehm will take on a new role at IU after resigning from her position Wednesday. Brehm will officially step down as chancellor Dec. 31 and become a senior adviser to President Adam Herbert, while also conducting studies on women in higher education. She will continue to teach a course for Wells Scholars.

Decision aids Herbert's plan to restructure IU

IU President Adam Herbert's restructuring plan for the University took its first steps Thursday, with the announcement of IU-Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Brehm's resignation. Brehm said her departure as chancellor, effective Dec. 31, is due in part to Herbert's vision for the organization of IU. Brehm said she resigned because Herbert is looking to change the role of the chancellor.

No. 1 offense next for struggling team

Playing in the Big Ten, it's necessary to bring your 'A' game every week. Last weekend, the Hoosiers fell far short of a passing grade in their 35-6 loss to Ohio State. IU's defense surrendered a season-high 603 yards of total offense to a then-struggling OSU offensive squad that ranked near the bottom of the conference.

Hoosiers hope for NCAA bid

With their conference schedule completed and a spot in the Big Ten tournament already earned, the Hoosiers have spent the past week preparing for two non-conference opponents in hopes of reaching the NCAA tournament. The team takes on Miami-Ohio, for senior night tonight, and Sunday it travels to Oakland, Mich., to take on Oakland University.

Former city mayor released from hospital

Former Bloomington Mayor and U.S. Congressman Frank McCloskey was released from the hospital Tuesday after a 12-day stay. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer in September 2002. Born in 1939 in Pennsylvania, McCloskey served as a newspaper reporter from 1961 to 1968, when he graduated from IU.

Residents pitch in with housing help

Few students reside in a house infested with rats. And not too many worry about living in one bedroom with six people. But that doesn't mean they aren't concerned about those who might. With the goal of eliminating poverty housing, the Bloomington community and IU students involved with Habitat for Humanity are determined to remove Monroe County residents from substandard living conditions.

Pumpkins recycled in 'launch'

Aside from the usual ghosts and chainsaw massacres, this weekend Bloomington residents might want to keep an eye out for flying pumpkins. The Great Bloomington Pumpkin Launch is giving participants the opportunity to test their pumpkin chucking skills Saturday as a way to recycle left-over pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns. Check-in begins at 11 a.m. and the event starts at noon.
