Herman B Wells had been thinking of a "cultural crossroads" at the heart of the IU campus since 1939, when he was first installed as its president. Here were two points -- the Union and the Library, with nothing between them. What Wells wanted was a space which students could pass through while moving between the two busiest points on campus. The University also needed a museum, as its collection of art was largely hidden in the vaults of what is now the Fine Arts Building.
Do you want your MTV? You can have mine. I sure as hell don't want it anymore. For four years, I've watched the channel in my attempt to stay attuned to the music world. My brain has melted enough from the prolonged exposure. Whenever I watch the network for too long, I feel myself devolving into a sensory-deprived beast, and nowadays I escape to the Weather Channel for higher quality programming.
With big name '90s rock groups dropping like flies, it's a surprise that Better Than Ezra has managed to stick around this long. Even after being dropped by its label, Elektra, less than two months ago, BTE continues to put out material.
The ultimate in over-the-top greatness -- James Cagney -- stars in this melodrama oozing with crime and intrigue. Cagney's Rocky Sullivan, which earned him an Oscar nomination and a New York Film Critics Award for best actor, finds himself out of juvenile detention and in cahoots with the Dead End Kids while a former buddy turned priest stands in his maniacal path.
Mel Gibson's underappreciated (both in terms of box office and critical praise) Revolutionary War epic recently made its debut upon the DVD format in a pristine Special Edition cut.
Hearing an album that starts out great but ends up mediocre is actually worse than hearing a CD horrible from beginning to end. At least a terrible CD doesn't raise any hopes of quality. It would actually be more fun to write an all-around negative review of Fiction, the American debut of Canadian duo guitarist/vocalists Adam Popowitz and Yve. But parts of the album are very enjoyable. So enjoyable that the bad parts just seem worse.
As Florida officials recount every vote from Tuesday's presidential election, almost 800 miles away IU professors are discussing the potential effects of this historic race.
The Liberal Arts and Management program will be a beacon of light for Middle Way House Saturday night. The students of BUS X333:, Managing Business Functions, are sponsoring six hours of disc jockeys, bands, music and dancing to raise money for the charity while earning college credit.
DJs, Dateline and drugs Freshman Chris Oler tried to explain what's happening with today's rave scene while writing the agenda for the the DJs and Electronic Musician's Association, a campus group, on the board before its executive meeting: 1. Annie can't hold her liquor. 2. Exec reports 3. Venues 4. Adopt a crackhead program.
Kathi Bennett made her debut as women's basketball coach Tuesday night in a 74-64 preseason loss to the Lady Reebok All-Stars.
A weather man would likely have a better chance at predicting the extent of Laura Dewitz's playing time. A tarot-card-toting, 800-number psychic might be a more suitable prognosticator of the length of the lanky senior's stint on the volleyball court.
The IU Student Association deserves credit for attacking an issue on campus that really affects student welfare and happiness: early-morning construction noise.
Talk of the football team qualifying for its first bowl game since 1993 started during offseason conditioning. By the start of spring practice in March, the Hoosiers were a confident team. In the summer months before the season, some people in the program were confident the Hoosiers would play in the postseason.
Calling ourselves victims might be too nice a label to put on our collective self. We're actually more like idiots. Why else would a Florida judge uphold the $145 billion damage award in the Florida smokers' trial?
With the Major League Baseball playoffs finishing up, the NFL season is getting into full swing, all the hype surrounding the beginning of the NBA and college basketball seasons and the closest and craziest presidential election still unresolved, the National Hockey League season has started rather quietly.
Dating. It has been an area that has both intrigued and frustrated me for the past four years.
The IU Student Association's position as the representative of the student body merits its construction limits resolution, but the limits are not well-considered.
I am writing to thank everyone at Dance Marathon for giving me one of the greatest experiences of my college career, as well as of my life. I was a first-time dancer, and it turned out to be greater than I could possibly have imagined.
