Event brings fine arts, 50 artists to courthouse lawn

·

The sky may have been a dreary gray on Saturday, but Bloomington’s downtown square was the exact opposite. Swirls of colors and shapes sheltered under neat white tents clearly distinguished the 27th Arts Fair on the Square from any hint of the lackluster conditions.

Proudly ambiguous

·

During my last week of high school, my graduating class had a “future college mascot dress-up day.” That day, the halls were filled with tigers, mustangs, bulldogs and even spiders. However, being the first from my school in Memphis, Tenn., to attend IU, I faced something of a predicament: how do you begin to dress as a Hoosier?

Horny professors

·

The professor and the student. This duo is often misunderstood. To students, their professors can seem distant and aloof, more like objects than humans, like fake plants or pieces of office furniture. It is quite easy to forget that professors are people first, with feelings and emotions not totally dissimilar to those of their pupils. And on the most basic level, both students and professors are subject to the same ... urges.

Wake Up!

·

It’s not unusual for me to be shocked and appalled by our government. I count it as a sign of my own naivete that I am still consistently surprised by the lack of humanity and common decency displayed by the leaders of this country, and, frankly, their coddled constituency. There’s just so much to be enraged over that whenever it’s time to write a column, it’s hard to know where to begin.

Space, the necessary frontier

Norton Juster’s “The Phantom Tollbooth” begins with the protagonist Milo returning home from school. He simply can’t figure out the point of his education. When he gets to his house, he finds a giant package addressed mysteriously to him – though it’s not his birthday, nor a holiday, nor has he been particularly nice as of late.

Hoeppner dies at age 59

·

IU head football coach Terry Hoeppner died early Tuesday morning due to complications from a brain tumor, team physician Dr. Larry Rink said. He was 59. “Coach died due to complications from the brain tumor for which he had been treated surgically and therapeutically over the past 18 months, “ Rink said in a statement. “His family was at his side.” Hoeppner had been on an extended medical leave of absence extending through the 2007 season, and had been receiving chemotherapy and radiation. The IU Athletics Department held a press conference reinforcing their full confidence in Coach Hoeppner and named assistant head coach Bill Lynch head coach for the 2007 season in Hoeppner’s stead Friday, June 15. Greenspan said he had been in contact with Hoeppner over the last several weeks, and he said, as Hoeppner was fond of saying, that he didn’t lose, he just ran out of timeouts. “I’ve seen him several times in the last few days,” Greenspan said, “and had a chance to say a few things to him on Father’s Day on Sunday, and that was good for me. He’s certainly struggled with his health here. ... I think from the medical folks (standpoint) he was doing much better than he had done in several weeks, and obviously he took a rapid turn and he (just) ran out of timeouts.”

Fans remember Hoeppner's enthusiasm, passion

·

After IU football coach Terry Hoeppner became IU’s 26th football coach in December of 2004, Dean of Students Dick McKaig remembers a session the following spring at Whittenberger Auditorium in the Indiana Memorial Union in which Hoeppner openly talked to students about the football program and its future.
