For the love of the holiday

Like Christmas, Valentine’s Day has always been a holiday that I have not gotten into. I have never been one of those girls in good enough graces to have a boyfriend this time of the year, so I have traditionally felt that the candy hearts and roses did not pertain to me.

House passes Obama's economic stimulus bill

Handing the new administration a big win, the House Friday passed President Barack Obama's $787 billion plan to resuscitate the economy. The bill was passed 246-183 with no Republican help.

Firefighters spray water on a fire on Clarence Center Road involving an airplane and a home Thursday. New York state police say a 50-passenger commuter plane has crashed into a home in suburban Buffalo. There was no immediate information on injuries. State Trooper John Manthey says the plane hit a house in Clarence at about 10:10 p.m. Thursday.

A commuter plane dropped out of the sky without warning and nose-dived into a suburban Buffalo house in a fiery crash that killed all 49 people aboard and one person in the home.

Stripe-out set for Sunday’s tilt with Illini

IU coach Tom Crean and his young Hoosiers have had a tough go of it since their last home game.Hoping to get some of that momentum back against Illinois, the Hoosier faithful have been asked to participate in a stripe-out.

Students bowl Thursday evening in the Back Alley at the IMU. IMU officials are considering recommendations to replace the bowling alley.

Backhaul Direct in Indianapolis made a proposal on Oct. 24 to IMU Executive Director Bruce Jacobs and IMU Assistant Director Rob Meyer to give the IMU between $250,000 and $300,000 to renovate and keep open the bowling alley.

Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference Events

The 2009 Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference is taking place at IU this year with the theme “Living Out Loud: Examining Our Past to Enhance Our Future.” Students not registered for the conference can buy one-day passes through the IU box office or Ticketmaster. Students registered for the conference do not need to buy passes separately.

IU looks for ways to make health care cheaper

With rising health care costs and a mission not to increase educational fees, IU President Michael McRobbie announced Wednesday he organized a committee to find methods of making employee health care more cost-effective. “This is one of a number of actions he’s taking to cut administrative costs and expenses in ways that will not affect IU’s educational costs,” said IU Spokesman Larry MacIntyre.

Men, women equal in assessing romantic interest

A new speed-dating study shows men and women are equal when it comes to assessing each other’s romantic interests. Skyler Place, a doctoral student in the IU psychology and brain sciences department, along with cognitive science professor Peter Todd, published the study in the January issue of the Psychological Science journal. “Our goal was to see if observers of a date could predict romantic interest between others,” Place said.
