Doherty tries to regroup Tar Heels

·

Joseph Forte went to the NBA along with Brendan Heywood. Ronald Curry and Julius Peppers decided to stick with football. Head Coach Matt Doherty knew this season would be hard for North Carolina, considering what he lost from a team that fell to Penn State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last March. Plus, the Tar Heels have to run through the rugged ACC, which is loaded with No. 1 Duke and No. 5 Maryland among others.

Team holds youth workshops

·

Games and practices aren't the only thing the volleyball players do. On the Saturday mornings of home Big Ten matches, the players are at the University Gymnasium teaching volleyball techniques to about 100 children. The children who attend the clinics are known as Junior Hoosier Hitters. "We teach little kids the basic skills of volleyball and try and get them to have fun and be enthusiastic about it," sophomore Anna Makowski said.

Sisters' artwork part of exhibit at Waldron Arts Center

·

The two sets of artwork currently on exhibit in the Rosemary P. Miller Gallery at the John Waldron Arts Center, 122 S. Walnut St., don't appear to have much in common. One artist paints tranquil scenes of natural places around Bloomington. The other paints mystical, energetic scenes of angels and animals.

A group of Little 500 riders submitted an open letter Monday declaring their discontent about freshman Joshua Weir's participation in Saturday's race. Riders Council Chair and senior Michael Nierengarten said 15 teams signed the letter. The teams said they fully agree with IU Student Foundation and want the established rules to be followed.

New district lines to be drawn

·

Indiana House Democrats presented their redistricting maps Monday, and it's almost certain that Bloomington will fall into the 9th congressional district by the 2002 election. Under state and federal law, the General Assembly is required to redraw its legislative maps every 10 years. As a result of population shifts shown by last year's census, Indiana loses one of its 10 congressional seats.

Raising the bar on language

·

At its December meeting, the Bloomington Faculty Council passed new English proficiency standards for associate instructors, the first change in the policy since 1979. Under the new rules, AIs now have one semester in which to improve their English skills. In the meantime they are allowed to assume the duties and benefits of an AI (full tuition remission plus a stipend upwards of $3,000).

Hoosiers set for Cinderella UNC-Wilmington

·

SACRAMENTO - Junior guard Tom Coverdale admits the Hoosiers were surprised when UNC-Wilmington knocked off USC in overtime Thursday night, 93-89, just before IU beat up on Utah. It's only natural there would be a little excitement, too, when you avoid playing the fourth seed and instead play the 13th-seeded Seahawks for a trip to the Sweet Sixteen. But Coverdale and the Hoosiers' thoughts of looking ahead to IU's first Sweet Sixteen appearance since 1994 were stopped when they took a closer look at UNC-Wilmington. "There wasn't much reaction because we we're trying to focus on Utah," Coverdale said of Thursday night. "I think we we're a little excited at first but then after watching the film we know we're probably playing the better of the two teams because they just totally outplayed USC.

Athletes are students first

·

Myles Brand has always pushed "academics first," and if the Bloomington Faculty Council knows what is best for student athletes, they will take Brand's words seriously and endorse the Resolution on Intercollegiate Athletics; the same proposal endorsed by the Committee on Institutional Cooperation and the PAC-10.

Holding off the Irish

·

Tom Coverdale doesn't know why, but there is something about playing against Notre Dame that brings out the best in him. Even when the game is on the line and the other team is trying to rattle him, Coverdale seems to like beating the Irish.

IUSF losing credibility; rules should apply to all riders

·

Michael Kehrberg is very familiar with the hills of Bloomington. He has pedaled up most of the mountainous inclines including one that leads from the house he grew up in. Kehrberg belongs on a bike. But for the third consecutive year Kehrberg will be one of 17,000 spectators watching Little 500 from the stands. And it's not because he doesn't want to ride. It's because, for the past two years, he's abided by an IUSF rule -- the same rule that was recently bent for Joshua Weir of Team Major Taylor.

Don't feel violated

·

The Bush administration is getting harped on left and right for not doing what many Americans want. First, it's blamed for not taking enough action to prevent Sept. 11 from happening despite numerous threats. So then why are so many aggravated now because he's granting broader investigative powers to the FBI?
