IU could face tuition increase

·

Students will not be spared by the statewide fiscal problems facing Hoosiers at this year's General Assembly session. The projected $1.3 billion state deficit could force administrators to raise tuition if state revenues are not increased. If Indiana legislature is able to raise revenue and reduce spending, public education may not experience any further budget cuts and IU students may not have to deal with the resulting increase in tuition.

Seat belt malarkey

·

My political philosophy, grounded primarily in the libertarian principles and ideals that founded this great nation, has often been criticized as anti-government and insensitive. Two weeks ago, I realized why I appreciate and value my political beliefs so much when I was given a ticket for not wearing my seat belt.

Senate Democrats attempted to amend the two-year state budget Tuesday. Their $2.3 billion proposal would have increased higher education spending by an additional $84 million. As expected, Senate Republicans shot down the measure with a 32-18 vote across partly lines. The Republicans presented their own trimmed down budget last week, which they said reflected a slowing national economy and shrinking state revenues. Democrats complain the budget doesn't address needs such as education.

IU joins five ranked teams in championships

·

In their last dual meet of the year, the unranked Hoosiers took the 21st ranked Purdue Boilermakers by surprise, winning in convincing fashion. Now, the Hoosiers hope it's time to take the rest of the conference by surprise when the Big Ten championship meet begins today at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center and continues through Saturday. "We need to make this the best meet of the year to date," Coach Kris Kirchner said. "We need to be swimming faster than we ever have before."

Bigger isn't always better

·

Ladies (and guys too), take a moment to visualize your ideal cup size. Is your imagination working? Some of you out there may want bigger breasts. Simply put, you want some cleavage. As a woman in our society, it's hard to deal with the pressures of "measuring up" to the image of the ideal breast size. It's especially difficult when Victoria's Secret model Gisele is dancing around in her bra and panties in a commercial that claims she is a curvaceous woman.

IU expects $1.9 million from parking violations

·

In November, a recommendation was made to the Transportation and Parking Advisory Committee to raise the price of parking tickets by $5 and to give the revenue to the IU Auditorium. Recent criticism stemming from the proposal has put pressure on the University to explain where parking ticket revenues go. The parking ticket price increase was proposed to the committee by Bruce Jacobs, associate vice chancellor of administrative affairs for Residential Programs and Services. He made the proposal with hopes of bridging the $200,000 gap between what students pay for shows at the IU Auditorium (which are discounted), and the actual prices of show tickets.
