Longform

The Cab: Whisper War

Catch a ride with The Cab

·

Whisper War was released at the perfect time. It’s meant to be listened to with the windows down on a sunny day. Although the latter half of the album isn’t as impressive as the first, The Cab may have pioneered a new sub-genre: boyband emo.

Portishead: Third

Third time’s a real charm

·

With three albums over their 17-year existence, Portishead has never been prolific, but they’ve never taken the chance to skew their outstanding track record, either. Third sees Portishead again living up to their standard that if you’re going to take forever to put out material, it better be damn good.

Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

Harold and Kumar smoke more weed

·

Back by popular demand, Harold and Kumar pick up where they left off in White Castle with perfecting the art of the well timed fart and stereotypical gags that leave no minority untouched. The chemistry between the characters and the film’s unabashed humor compensate for a mediocre plot.

Cloverfield

A new breed of monster movie

·

The best advice I can give is to ignore the hype, grab some Dramamine, and let one of Hollywood’s most talented production teams show you how a genre can be reinvented with style.

Grand Bet

·

If you’re a video game studio, how do you follow up one of the best video games ever made in “GTA: San Andreas”? If you’re Rockstar, you follow it up with the best video game ever made. I know that ever since the gaming media got their hands on “Grand Theft Auto IV” a couple of weeks ago the superlatives have been flying faster and harder than a hail of bullets, but I can’t in good conscience not join the chorus after having logged over 24 hours of play having only had the game in my hands for five days.

Dance yourself to sleep

·

In the three years since Madonna’s last studio album Confessions on a Dance Floor, the world has been waiting eagerly for the “Vogue” woman’s next celluloid reminder that she has become irrelevant.

In Columbia Pictures' Made of Honor, when Tom's (Patrick Dempsey, left) best friend, Hannah (Michelle Monaghan, right), asks him to be her maid of honor, Tom accepts - but only so he can woo the bride-to-be and attempt to stop the wedding before it's too late. The film is directed by Paul Weiland. The screenplay is by Adam Sztykiel and Deborah Kaplan & Harry Elfont. The story is by Adam Sztykiel. The producer is Neal H. Moritz.

Chick flick anatomy

·

Watching “Made of Honor” is nothing but a cruel reminder of the movie that it will never live up to, the classic romantic comedy and mother of all chick flicks: “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” Simply the same tale, but with reversed roles and a more modern spin, the sole highlight of this film is the amazingly charming and handsome Patrick Dempsey. (There are five, count ‘em five, shirtless scenes).

(L to R) Mother-to-be Kate Holbrook (TINA FEY), surrogate center head Chaffee Bicknell (SIGOURNEY WEAVER) and surrogate Angie Ostrowiski (AMY POEHLER) in the comic story of two women, one apartment and the nine months that will change their lives--?Baby Mama?.

Wouldn't Mama be proud?

·

“Baby Mama” has some remnants of Tina Fey’s comedic gold, but it’s obviously just an attempt for a box office hit. The film is certainly humorous, but her fans should expect more. Sure, it’s got more depth than all of Will Ferrell’s films combined, but that’s not saying much.

Iron Man

Downey Jr. is invincible

·

Robert Downey Jr. is back, and he’s not going away. His performance as weapons dealer Tony Stark single-handedly makes "Iron Man" one of the best superhero movies in recent memory. Downey takes a film that had the potential to be terribly cheesy and turns it into something spectacular.

Personalities prevail over election issues

Candidates’ personalities were more important than issues for some students who voted in local and state elections Saturday at the Curry Building, but they generally knew little about either.  BLOG:  The Politiker  PODCAST:  Hoosier Headlines
