Campus clocks chime almost 100 tunes

From the school fight song to “You Are My Sunshine,” the National Anthem to “Singin’ in the Rain,” the red clocks we pass on campus have a song for any day. Sure, it’s nice background music for a walk to class, but have you ever wondered just how these tunes are decided? We did, and decided to seek out the people behind the clockwork.

Sorority rush ends with new homes for chosen few

Libby Lienhoop was one of about 1,500 women to go through sorority recruitment in the 2009-10 academic year. Rush began in December with 19 Party and ended Monday with Bid Day. Knowing that IU has the most competitive recruitment processes in the country made Libby nervous, but above all, she was excited.

Career advisers urge Facebook caution

Pictures of students drinking or partying could potentially damage their chances of gaining employment. Job search companies have admitted to routinely doing “Facebook checks” and reporting inappropriate photos of prospective employees, according to the IU Career Development Center.

OSU-IU cancer center receives $9 million in support

The National Cancer Institute granted IU and Ohio State University $9 million today to support the continuation of studying cancer genes and epegenetics, the sometimes-unnatural agents that mask the genes’ expression.

Your username. It’s your college calling card, your identity for four (or more) years, and the first thing you type when you sit down to a computer. When we enrolled, most of us were just looking for the purest form of a username: a first initial and last name. But with more than 100,000 students across nine campuses, we can’t all be pure.

Alex Martin makes field for 2010 US Open

As Alex Martin stood at the first tee on the Brookside Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio, he shook hands with his playing partner for the day, 2008 U.S. Open runner-up Rocco Mediate. Little did Martin know that 12 hours, 137 shots and three playoff holes later, he would be heading to Pebble Beach, marking the second consecutive year that a member of the IU men’s golf team would be represented at the U.S. Open.

Hilltop summer children's garden makes junior gardeners masters

Greg Speichert, director of the new Summer Junior Master Gardening Program at IU’s Hilltop Gardens, teaches the group from 9 a.m. to noon every Tuesday. Lessons include everything from the different smells of garlic plants to how to spread hay. And, because of continued budget cuts, he's the only one there.

IU Athletics to join Indianapolis GLBT celebration

Not only will this be the first time the IU Athletics Department is participating in Circle City IN Pride, but it is the first athletics department of any university in the nation to attend a Pride event, said Jon Kitto, secretary of the IU GLBT Alumni Association.

Martin excels on course, in class

Martin, who recently qualified for the 2010 U.S. Open, was a two-time All-Big Ten selection during his college career. He also led the Hoosiers his senior year with a season scoring average of 72.33, the eighth-lowest in school history. Martin also received his second career medalist honors during his senior year with the Renaissance Intercollegiate individual title.

USA vs. England World Cup Preview

The 2010 version is also hotly anticipated, as ESPN has billed the match “the biggest game of the World Cup.” There is much more than a game at stake, as the winner between the two will most likely determine who wins Group C. The United States seems to have the upper hand in momentum, as it has put up two solid wins in its final games before World Cup action, defeating its opponents 5-2.

Dickerson reflects on success

Dickerson was the first player in IU history to win Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Big Ten Player of the Year in consecutive seasons. He was also part of the Second Team All-Big Ten, a third team All-Mideast Region selection, and a recipient of Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association.
