Team faces Wildcats at home

The hockey team will face the University of Kentucky in a home-and-home series this weekend, beginning at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Frank Southern Center, 1965 S. Henderson St. The second game will be played at midnight Saturday in Kentucky's Lexington Ice Center.

Hoosiers travel to Big Tens

The women's cross country team has some big plans for the end of the season. The first goal might be met this Sunday at the Big Ten Championships in Savoy, Ill.

Saturday marks season's end

The women's rowing team will wrap up its fall season Saturday at the Head of the Elk regatta in Elkhart, Ind. The race will take place on the St. Joseph River, a 2.5-mile stretch of numerous bends and curves. The Hoosiers are excited about the coming weekend and look forward to a competitive race. Indiana will face off against the 2001 Big Ten Conference Champions University of Michigan, Purdue, Notre Dame and Michigan State.

Big Tens mean business

This Sunday in Savoy, Ill., the No. 23 Hoosiers will compete in the Big Ten Cross Country Championships at the University of Illinois golf course. Last season, the men's team finished second, and this year's Hoosiers are looking for a similar performance. The Big Ten's strength in distance running will make this a difficult task.

Texas Tech called for cancellation

The decision to cancel the men's basketball game in December of 2002 against former coach Bob Knight and Texas Tech at Assembly Hall was initiated by Texas Tech and was agreed upon by IU administrators, said Jeff Fanter, IU Athletics media relations director. The cancellation was originally announced through a press release Oct. 13.

Facing best of the Midwest

The women's tennis team is competing in the Omni Hotels Regional Championships this weekend at the Neilsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. The tournament consists of the best players in the Midwest. The singles champion, singles finalist and champion doubles team from each region will earn an automatic berth into the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November.

Team pleased with progress

Heading into its final weekend of regular season play, the field hockey team is concentrating on its own play and improving for the future. The Hoosiers are 1-13 overall and 0-4 in conference play going into the weekend, but Hoosiers said they have come a long way in their second year as a varsity sport.

Anti-terror bill passes

WASHINGTON -- The Senate sent President George W. Bush a package of anti-terror measures Thursday that gives police sweeping new powers to search people's homes and business records secretly and to eavesdrop on telephone and computer conversations. Bush said he will sign the bill "so that we can combat terrorism and prevent future attacks."

Team heads to Region IV

The three seniors on the men's tennis team are looking to lead the Hoosiers this weekend at the annual Region IV Championship hosted by Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich. Both singles and doubles matches will be played in single elimination tournaments with no consolation brackets. The Championship consists of the top men's players in the Midwest.

Planes blast Taliban

BAGRAM, Afghanistan -- U.S. jets dive-bombed Taliban positions on the front line north of the Afghan capital on Thursday, eluding at least one missile and sending thick columns of black smoke climbing into a cloudless sky. Warplanes later pounded Kabul in the strongest attack on the city in days.

Home court should help start season's second half

Confidence and revenge are on the minds of the women's volleyball team this weekend as they enter the second round of Big Ten play, hosting Iowa and Minnesota. IU has home court advantage after visiting both teams earlier in the month and is looking to continue its newfound winning ways after beating long time rival Purdue last weekend.

Shooting leaves one man wounded

A Bloomington man faces charges of attempted murder after two sheriff's deputies were shot at late Wednesday night. Police returned fire during the standoff, and a sheriff's deputy shot the man they say was shooting at them. Around 11 p.m. Wednesday, a neighbor called the sheriff\'s department to reporting shooting coming from the area of 2900 W. Vernal Pike, police reports said.

Must win for Big Ten berth

The women's soccer team is in the midst of a four-game losing streak, including losing two pivotal games last weekend at home. All the negative feelings from the losses can be erased with a victory at 7 p.m. tonight against Purdue at Bill Armstrong Stadium. A win would give the Hoosiers (6-6-1, 3-5-1) a berth in the Big Ten tournament, which would be a great accomplishment after going 1-8-1 in the conference last season.

Porn unhealthy, violent

Pornography equals brutality, violence, sexual deviation, financial loss, unhealthy relationships, broken marriages, disease and death. Gene McConnell, president and founder of Authentic Relationships International, encountered them all as a result of his addiction to pornographic materials. McConnell, who is based in Cincinnati, shared his experiences with students Wednesday night at Alumni Hall as part of a Campus Crusade for Christ lecture series.

Linebacker lives it up off field

Weekend failures plague campus computer network

Computer servers across campus stopped Saturday morning as IU's computing services were off-line. The problems prevented students from accessing the Shakespeare e-mail systems, the Windows NT application servers (R drive), the Common File System and IU Web pages Saturday morning. "I was not able to check my grades on the Post'em system over the weekend," freshman Justin Ross said.

HPER library auction today 3lines

The IU School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation will hold its 15th Annual Library Auction today. At about 11:30 a.m., people of all ages will file into the HPER Faculty Lounge to start bidding on such items as IU Basketball tickets, furniture, televisions and VCRs. Jerry Bastin, a professional auctioneer, will be presenting this year's items. In previous years, faculty members have auctioned off the items, said Mary Strow, the Head Librarian of the HPER School.

State judge and alumni leader dies

Former Indiana Supreme Court Justice Paul George Jasper, an IU alumnus from the class of 1932, died Tuesday. He was 92. Jasper served as IU Alumni Foundation president from 1960-1961, and was to be inducted into the Law School's Academy of Law Alumni Fellows next week, said Lynn Lewis, chairwoman of the IU Alumni Foundation's board of managers. He will now receive the honor posthumously, she said.

Search for new leader begins

A 10-member committee began its search Wednesday for a new IU Alumni Association president. The committee will replace Jerry Tardy, who led the Association for 14 years before his death Sept. 7. The committee hopes to find someone with connections to IU and a great love for the University, said J. Terry Clapacs, vice president and chief administrative officer and the chair of the committee. The committee hopes to complete its work by January, Clapacs said.

Original musical premieres

This weekend, a world premiere musical written by an IU student and her husband will open at the John Waldron Arts Center at 122 S. Walnut. Senior Catherine Peterson-Smith wrote the book and lyrics; Koven Smith wrote the music.
