Stressed out? Library too loud to study? Cold weather getting to you? For most of Bloomington's students, staff and residents, escaping to a nearby coffeehouse for some rest, relaxation and, of course, some great coffee, seems to be not just a fad, but also the smart thing to do. Runcible Spoon, Soma and Espresso Royale are just a few of Bloomington's locally owned hot spots for some hot drinks. Comfort, quiet and great atmosphere blend such coffeehouses together, yet their unique styles present variety and pizzazz.

Punk pop group stays true to music

Pop punk is becoming more popular with the kids these days, and new bands are sprouting up so the labels can cash in on the pimple-faced craze. It's good to know that a punk band, which was good even before the fad, can stay true to rocking hard and kicking ass. With their fifth full-length release entering stores Jan. 29, Elva might just put the group into the spotlight.

Talented young director taken in prime

Director Ted Demme passed away two Sundays ago at the entirely too young age of 38. Many people have little or no idea about who Mr. Demme was, but fans of his small, independent and oftentimes quirky works know that he was somebody indeed.

Men look to improve standings

After a successful weekend at Purdue, the men's club volleyball team is preparing to carry its confidence into the upcoming Michigan Classic at the University of Michigan Jan. 26 and 27. The Hoosiers began their Big Ten season Sunday, competing in the first of two Big Ten qualifiers. The next qualifier will be played at Iowa Feb. 16. The results of overall play through the two qualifiers determine the seeds for the Big Ten tournament March 22 and 23 at Northwestern. Facing Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue and Iowa didn't seem to faze the Hoosiers as they returned to Bloomington undefeated (4-0) and looking forward to the next series of matches.

Fraternity party busted by police

In the early morning hours of Friday, Jan. 18th, IU Police Department officers arrived at Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, 1431 N. Jordan Ave. in response to an anonymous phone call complaining of loud music and alcohol being present at the fraternity, according to police. No arrests were made, and IUPD Lt. Jerry Minger said the incident was a University matter.

Women lose game against Wolverines

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Usually a promising start to the second half is a good boost for a team and can lead to a victory. So after IU forward Jenny DeMuth hit two three pointers in the first 2:18 of the second session, it looked as though the Hoosiers might break out of their four-game losing streak. But a Michigan run erased that momentum and carried the Wolverines to a 68-55 victory.

Kruzan won't seek re-election

Democratic Rep. Mark Kruzan, D-Bloomington, announced Monday he will not run for re-election to the Indiana House of Representatives this fall. Kruzan was first elected in 1986 as representative for House District 61. He has served as House Majority Leader since 1996 and was House Minority Whip from 1994 to 1996. Kruzan, 41, was the youngest legislator in the General Assembly until 1992.

Team remains undefeated in Division 1 after solid weekend

"I said to the guys, we don't need four players down low. We were playing like we were down by a goal and not tied," he said.
