Palestinian woman sets off bomb

JERUSALEM -- For the first time, a Palestinian woman launched a bomb attack Sunday, killing herself and an 81-year-old Israeli man and wounding at least a dozen people on a busy Jerusalem street. Israeli police said they were not sure if the woman intended to kill herself or if the bomb exploded prematurely as she walked along Jaffa Street, the main commercial strip in west Jerusalem.

Kirkwood ticket hopes to be more in touch with students

A third party has entered the horizon for the upcoming IU Student Association elections. Now challenging the Synergy and Steel parties for the candidacy is the Kirkwood ticket. Kirkwood ticket candidates for executive council include: Bill Gray, president; Judd Arnold, Vice President of Adminstration; Vanessa Sea, Vice President of Congress; and Blair Greenberg, Treasurer.

Karzai: First Afghan leader to visit Capital in 39 years

WASHINGTON -- When Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan's interim leader, meets President Bush today, he is expected to seek a continuing U.S. commitment to help restore the peace in his violence-torn country, Afghan officials say. Karzai arrived here Sunday afternoon, the first Afghan leader to visit Washington in 39 years.

Libertarian candidate wants to change voting system

Libertarian candidate for secretary of state Paul Hager said he is the only candidate with a solid platform issue on which to run. Bloomington Mayor John Fernandez is the only candidate currently running as a Democrat. Kent Benson, former IU basketball player, is one of the Republican candidates running for office.

Take time to educate yourself

Democrats in the U.S. Congress are like broken record players. Since Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle's Jan. 4 economic policy speech, they have taken every opportunity to blame the president and last year's tax cuts for the current recession. But the seeds of our economic problems were sown well before Bush took office. Historical and empirical evidence also confirms that tax cuts actually soften the impact and shorten the duration of periods of economic contraction. How, then, can an entire political party deny reality and thrive under a banner of higher taxes and bigger government? As one notable democratic strategist might say, "It's the electorate, stupid!"

Hoosiers take loss as chance to learn

The IU men's tennis team (2-1) lost its first road match of the spring season to Louisville (3-0) 5-2 Thursday. The Hoosiers accomplished what they wanted to but didn't get the results they expected. They won the doubles point, yet failed to claim the singles points. Senior Rahman Smiley (9-5) claimed the only IU singles victory out of six opportunities. He defeated the Cardinals' Alex Sivertsen 6-2, 7-5.

Room to improve for women's tennis

The men\'s swimming and diving squads travel to Iowa City, Iowa, tomorrow to take on Big Ten foes Iowa (1-2) and Minnesota (2-0). The Golden Gophers, ranked sixth in the nation and the reigning Big Ten champions, could be the Hoosiers' toughest competition. "I think we really need to get up to swim Minnesota because we'll swim them in Big Tens and they're the powerhouse," sophomore Matt Leach said. "They're the ones that won it last year and we're looking to take as many races as we can from them."
