Flood waters set new record

Lake Monroe reached record levels Wednesday as runoff from the week's heavy rains caused the already-swollen lake to rise even higher. For the first time in the dam's 37-year history, water levels rose high enough to reach the emergency spillway, designed to handle overflow from the dam.

Professor receives national science award

Ernest Davidson, Distinguished Professor and the Robert and Marjorie Mann Chair in Computational Quantum Chemistry, was awarded the National Medal of Science, the most prestigious scientific honor conferred by the United States government, May 9. He will be one of 15 accomplished scientists to be honored at a White House ceremony June 13, during which President George W. Bush will present the honorees with their medals.

IU faculty salaries rank sixth in Big Ten

After the IU Board of Trustees four-year effort to increase faculty salaries, the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) recently released data showing IU has improved its comparative ranking with other Big Ten institutions. In the 2000-2001 academic year IU was ranked seventh among Big Ten public institutions in average salary levels for full professors, associate professors and assistant professors. Currently, IU is ranked sixth.

Foyt's drivers looking for speed on Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS -- A.J. Foyt will have three drivers for Sunday's final Indianapolis 500 qualifications.

Team loses to Auburn, fails to advance

The IU women's tennis team served up the usual this past Saturday -- strong doubles play and porous singles play -- in a 4-3 heartbreaker to Auburn in the NCAA Regional semi-finals. A team that has been hampered by injuries all season long, especially down the final stretch, it has relied heavily on the team doubles point but been unable to count on singles to ice matches. The result has been a dreary 4-5 team record in April and May, and four 4-3 losses, including the most recent season-ending loss to Auburn.

'Clan of Cave Bear' author to speak tonight at Alumni Hall

Since the debut of her best-selling novel "Clan of the Cave Bear" in 1980, author Jean Auel has won the hearts of readers and archeologists alike with her intensely researched prehistoric fiction series, "Earth's Children." Now on a book tour for her long awaited novel "Shelters of Stone" that was 12 years in the making, Auel will making a special stop at IU's Alumni Hall tonight at 6 p.m. to give a presentation for the craftsmanship lecture series which is featured by the Center for Research into the Anthropological Foundations of Technology (CRAFT) annually.

Tribute to teachers

Graduated seniors aren't the only people who won't be gracing IU with their presence next year. Two wonderful teachers recently packed up their offices for the last time. I know they were great because I had them both. They were both associate instructors and they were both phenomenal.

CINCINNATI -- For those people who train for a marathon, many just hope to finish the race. IU junior Nathan Dufault was different -- he wanted to finish the race in less than three hours.

Team fails to advance

The IU women's golf team finished its season with a disappointing 16th place finish at the NCAA Central Regional Saturday at the Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.

Davis near signing new 6-year deal

IU Basketball coach Mike Davis was honored Saturday evening with the Male Coach of the Year award by the Black Coaches Association (BCA) at the Hyatt Regency of Indianapolis. Davis was nominated for the award after he proved to be the most successful first-year head coach in the 101-year history of IU men's basketball, according to a press release from the BCA.

Final Met show a surprise

For Luciano Pavarotti, it's over. For Salvatore Licitra, it's just beginning. On a night of high drama at the opera house, Pavarotti disappointed thousands of his fans by deciding at the last minute he was too ill with the flu to sing the closing performance of the Metropolitan Opera season. Licitra, a young Sicilian tenor, went on instead -- and scored the most triumphant Met debut in recent memory.

'Afterdark' thought provoking and complex

The new play that opened at the Bloomington Playwrights Project this weekend, "Afterdark" by New Yorker Kara Manning, is supposed to examine the personal lives and relationships of seven city dwellers trying to make sense of their world, post-Sept. 11. It does successfully raise some important questions and offer flashes of occasional insight, but just how many questions and what they may be is not always clear. For every truth eloquently illuminated, there seems to be two other threads left untied.
