Charges not yet filed in death of freshman

Charges have not yet been filed in the death of Berkley Branson, a freshman killed a little more than a week ago. Branson, 19, died a few hours after she attempted to exit the 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Matthew Willett of Evansville. The Vanderburgh County Coroner's report issued late last week attributed her death to a lacerated liver. Branson was in Evansville for the Easter holiday, her parents said.

With the Hoosiers' next three games at Iowa, at Ohio State and at Penn State, coach Mike Davis pointed to Tuesday night's game against No. 25 Michigan State as a big one for the Hoosiers.

A slammin' start

Nothing could stop the Hoosiers on Sunday at Assembly Hall against Athletes in Action. At one point, sophomore forward Jared Jeffries grabbed a rebound and put it back to extend the IU lead to 72-42 midway through the second half. What's impressive about the play is Jeffries made it with one arm; Eric Dunn of Athletes in Action was holding the other one. Led by Jeffries' 23 points and eight rebounds, and with contributions from nearly every player on their roster, the Hoosiers whipped Athletes in Action, 105-59 in front of 11,553 fans in the team's pre-season opener. IU got out to a quick lead by scoring the game's first 19 points. Representative of the balance that would pace the Hoosiers all day, those 19 points came from five different players.

Middle Way House to benefit from Ladyfest Midwest event

A festival that began eight months ago on the west coast hits Bloomington today. Activities for Ladyfest Midwest will encompass women's issues as well as the arts. Workshops will include women's self defense, how to combat "fat oppression," vegetarian/vegan recipe swap, women with disabilities panel discussion, spirituality and gender issues and more. Tickets are available for $15 for the whole weekend or $5 per day, payable by money order in advance, or by cash the day of the festival.

Mr. Halcom: Regarding your column on President Bush's decision to impose steel tariffs, let me say you are dead wrong on some accounts. The steel industry doesn't need protection because "the domestic steel industry is grossly inefficient," as you wrote. Inefficient how? Exactly what is the basis for this statement? In fact, the American steel industry is more efficient than ever. American steel producers are at a great disadvantage to other nations who dump steel into our country at deflated prices. Buildings damaged from storm

A storm of blinding wind and rain that swept through campus over Memorial Day weekend has left two of the campus's oldest buildings in need of repair. The storm shattered windows, ripped down gutters, and caused disarray to offices in those buildings.

Business analyst pleads not guilty

An IU analyst accused of charges of child pornography and battery pled not guilty Friday. Kevin Sochocki, a programmer analyst for the Kelley School of Business, will be placed on administrative leave with pay from the school today, Associate Dean John Hill said. Sochocki was arraigned Friday on four charges of vicarious sexual gratification, one class C and three class D felonies; four charges of child exploitation, all class D felonies; and one count of battery, a class A misdemeanor.

U.N. foresees 300,000 starvation deaths in Africa

The United Nations said severe food shortages brought on by two years of drought could kill as many as 300,000 people in Southern Africa in the next half year.

International criminal court needed

The Bush administration announced its withdrawal Monday from an international treaty that calls for a permanent international criminal court to try suspected war criminals. President Clinton signed the treaty but never sought the needed Senate ratification that he knew the Senate wouldn't give him if he tried.

Thousands of foreign students studying in the U.S. or trying to enter U.S. institutions of higher learning are now being tracked electronically. The same will happen at IU sometime before Jan. 30, thanks to the Immigration and Naturalization Services new system to prevent terrorism.

Hoosiers defeat Wright State 14-6

Senior Gibran Hamdan's grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning instigated a 13-run inning that lifted IU over Wright St. 14-6 at Sembower Field last evening. The opposite field shot over the right field wall came one pitch after coach Bob Morgan was ejected from the game arguing balls and strikes.

Predictions aside, IU is where they want to be

So did anyone see this one coming? I didn't, the media didn't, the coaches didn't and my guess is you didn't either.

Arrests made at NYC airports

NEW YORK -- A man who tried to use a false pilot's identification to get past security was arrested Thursday at John F. Kennedy International Airport, and at least five more were detained, police said. The arrested man had tried to fly to California on Tuesday morning and was carrying a certificate from a Florida flight training school, according to a source familiar with the workings of the airline industry.
