Senate Bill No. 534 should be supported

Indiana Senate Bill No. 534, proposed early this year by Sen. Glenn Howard of Indianapolis, seeks to make amendments to the Indiana Code dealing with human services. More explicitly, the bill, if passed, will add "sexual orientation" to a list of other signifying factors, including race, religion, color, national origin, sex and age. These factors attest to an individual's civil rights under Indiana law.

Physicists tackle new project

Members of the IU physics department are just now finishing the first stage of work on a massive, multi-national science endeavor known as ATLAS. ATLAS is the name of a yet to be constructed, multi-purpose detector for particle physicists to observe the behavior of high energy proton collisions. When completed in 2007, the cylindrical ATLAS Detector will be five stories high and weigh 7,000 tons.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Alex Rodriguez was out of the Texas Rangers' starting lineup on Saturday night against Montreal with a bruised left knee. "I tweaked it a little bit last night," he said. "I'm not sure what play. It started swelling up last night, so I iced it and took anti-inflammatories."

Funny Cide fails in Triple try, Empire Maker takes Belmont

NEW YORK -- The magical ride ended in the mud, splashed aside by a rival who wasn't about to let a gelded nobody become part of racing royalty. Empire Maker caught Funny Cide on the far turn and won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, thwarting yet another Triple Crown hopeful's attempt to do what no horse has managed since Affirmed in 1978.

Boxing like it ought to be

Boxing never had much appeal to me. Sure, I'd watch the "big fights" if I had the opportunity, but I never really knew anyone outside of Tyson, Holyfield, Foreman and Bowe. So while I knew the top heavyweights, if you pulled out some middleweight I wouldn't have any idea of how he fought.

IU raises ticket prices

The IU Athletics Department has decided to raise non-student ticket prices for football games to offset financial troubles that have plagued the department since the departure of former athletics director Michael McNeely in November of 2002. Last year, the athletics department had a $3.2 million debt, and the IU athletics ticket manager Mike Roberts told The Associated Press the price changes are to combat this deficit.

Straw house to be constructed in Bloomington

The construction of the first ever straw bale house in Bloomington is being postponed from June 15 to Sept. 13. The straw house is a Habitat for Humanity project and is being co-sponsored by Bloomingfoods, the Center for Sustainable Living and Harmony School.

Herbert to take over Bepko's interim role

On Aug. 1, IU will transition from Interim President Gerald Bepko to newly selected president Adam W. Herbert. This transition will allow Bepko to retire from the administration and teach at the IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis School of Law.

Blues festival begins with first concert Saturday

Saturday afternoon the Bloomington Blues Festival kicked off at 4 p.m. with the first band, Gordan Bonham. The crowd, made up of frolicking young kids doing cartwheels, dancers, long-time blues fans and people out walking their dogs, collected around the stage in Bryan Park sitting on blankets and lawn chairs to listen to some local blues.

Professors question FCC decision

The Federal Communications Commission voted June 2 by a 3-2 margin to adopt a series of revisions on current policy regarding the consolidation of national media. Considered a victory by FCC Chairman Michael Powell, son of Secretary of State Colin Powell, the new adjustments could allow one corporation to reach as many as 45 percent of U.S. households by way of television.

DENVER -- Frustrated and angry over delays, a coalition of the nation's mayors asked federal officials on Sunday to bypass state governments and give them the money they need to beef up homeland security.

Civil rights might be amended

An expansion of civil rights protections will be the topic at noon today at the Monroe County Courthouse to announce the statewide initiative. The Indiana Equality initiative seeks to amend the state's civil rights laws to include sexual orientation and gender identity.
