People jump from windows to flee motel fire

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Fire broke out in a five-story motel early Sunday while guests were asleep, killing six and forcing others to leap from windows or climb down bed sheets to safety, authorities said. At least a dozen people were injured, including at least five in critical condition at a burn unit in Augusta, Ga. Guests and authorities said smoke filled the motel quickly, sending guests in their pajamas into a chaotic scramble for the exits and a cold rain outside.

U.S. soldier dies of injuries in Iraq

TIKRIT, Iraq -- A U.S. helicopter crashed in the Tigris river while searching for a missing soldier on Sunday, and the aircraft's two crew members were missing, the military said. It did not say what caused the crash of the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter, attached to the 101st Airborne Division.

Colorado students launch GOP site

'Survivor' to challenge students

About 50 members of fraternities, sororities, various student groups and randomly selected audience members will take part in the event. Based on the reality show "Survivor" the competition will begin at 8 p.m. in the Alumni Hall of the Indiana Memorial Union. Campus Crusade for Christ sponsors the event, but it is not exclusive to Christians, organizers said.

As a frat guy, I can tell you -- the Greek system is full of liars. To survive at IU, it has to be. There are little lies. "Sure, babe. Have another glass. Wine actually has LESS alcohol than beer." And then there are the difficult lies -- like pretending to encourage a sober environment at a school known for boisterous behavior. While the little ones might get them off, the big ones keep them on ... campus.

Buried someplace in my beat-up "School Memories" box are the fossils of my early political education. Anyone who attended an American school probably received similar papers -- remember the triangle-shaped diagrams linking the words executive, legislative and judicial? As they taught the fundamentals of our government's internal mechanisms, my teachers simultaneously presented one consistent message: our president (regardless of who was in office at the time) is a great man, and we should all hope to be like him someday.

University cleans house

Out with the old and in with the new. There have been no less than a dozen shifts in key administrative posts at IU within recent years. Whether spurred on by retirement, other interests or IU President Adam Herbert's restructuring, the University administration is currently undergoing its most radical face lift in more than a generation. Kelley School of Business Dean Dan Dalton's resignation last week brought the total number of open administrative leadership positions to seven (Jan. 22, IDS).

IU looks to stay on top

For a brief 24 hours, the IU men's basketball team was the sole leader of the Big Ten with a 3-1 conference record. But after Wednesday night's games, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Purdue jumped into the number one spot with IU (9-6 overall). At the bottom of the Big Ten standings lies a lonely Minnesota team, 0-4 in the Big Ten and 8-8 on the season. It's a Minnesota team that's struggled at home and away, and it's a Minnesota team that sophomore guard Marshall Strickland says IU will not take lightly. "They really need this win, and they are going to come out really hard," Strickland said. "So we're going to go in there and battle them." Strickland averaged 16 points a game in the last three IU games, hitting .500 (15-of-30) from the floor and .588 (10-of-17) from beyond the arc. He has also been perfect in his last ten free throw attempts.

Diplomat lectures on Afghanistan

Former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Robert P. Finn lectured to a packed house, Thursday, discussing current problems during the country's reconstruction. Throughout the war and reconstruction periods, he was the man responsible for the undertaking.

Panel discusses GLBT acceptance at IU

IU has come a long way in accepting its gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender population, concluded the participants of yesterday's "Being Gay at IU" panel, held at the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center. At the same time, there's still more work to be done. It wasn't until May 2002 that University employees could sign their partners on their insurance. Since then, more than 75 employees on the eight IU campuses have signed up for such benefits, said Cindy Stone, a training coordinator at the physical plant.

Candidates register with IUSA

Students looking to exercise their right to vote in this November's U.S. presidential election will get a dry-run this Spring. The IU Student Association election commission kicked off its annual election season Wednesday night at Woodburn Hall as potential candidates met with Election Coordinator Derek Molter for information on how to declare their candidacy for the 60 positions available in the 2004-2005 student government.

Earlham and Conner Prairie squabble over ownership rights

Citing a possible conflict of interest, Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter on Saturday announced the need for a split between Conner Prairie and Earlham College. Earlham currently manages the public charitable trust for the living history museum, which was founded in 1964 and opened ten years later in Fishers, Ind. Founded by renowned philanthropist Eli Lilly, its current operating budget is $9.6 million. Earlham oversees a trust which has grown to $150 million and has historically distributed interest earned equally between the college and Conner Prairie.
