Investigators find no abuses of human rights in legislature

WASHINGTON -- A Justice Department investigation into possible civil rights and civil liberties abuses under the anti-terrorism USA Patriot Act found no abuses but a few instances of mistreatment of Muslim and Arab people, mainly at U.S. prisons, according to a report released Tuesday.

LOS ANGELES -- A federal judge has thrown out a section of the USA Patriot Act that bars giving expert advice or assistance to groups designated foreign terrorist organizations. An attorney who argued the case on behalf of a civil liberties group said the ruling marks the first court decision to declare a part of the Patriot Act unconstitutional. In the ruling handed down late Friday and made available Monday, U.S. District Judge Audrey Collins said the ban is impermissibly vague in its wording.

Martha Stewart's stock sale trial opensNEW YORK -- Martha Stewart lied to investigators and committed "serious federal crimes" by selling off nearly 4,000 shares of stock based on a tip no one else had, a federal prosecutor charged Tuesday. But the defense said the case was based on mere speculation and guesswork. As opening statements got under way in federal court, Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Patton Seymour told jurors Stewart had lied to federal agents, and "multiplied that lie by feeding it to investors in her own company."

Classic Rivalry, Higher Stakes

As if the rivalry wasn't big enough between IU (10-6, 4-1 Big Ten) and Purdue (14-1, 4-1). Now the two teams will battle for the top of the Big Ten at 7 p.m. tonight in Assembly Hall. The last time the rivals played for first place in the Big Ten was in 1989 when the Hoosiers won 74-73. But the most recent match-up between the two was in West Lafayette, and IU took quite a beating and lost the game 69-47. Senior forward A.J. Moye remembers it clearly. "They whooped us last year," Moye said. "I've still got that taste in my mouth. I really want a win."

Man robbed at gunpoint in IMU

A Bloomington man was robbed at gunpoint by two men at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the sixth floor bathroom of the Indiana Memorial Union, according to the IU Police Department. The victim, 28, reported one suspect was a black male approximately six feet tall with an average build and facial hair.

Campus Web site hacked

Five hours after this year's biggest snowstorm had stopped, IU was put under an emergency alert, thanks to a student hacker who manipulated the campus warning Web site.

IU braves Survivor Challenge

The event was sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ and included fifty members of Greek houses, residence centers and campus organizations, along with audience members.

IUB receives grant for ePortfolio

Coffee houses address greater concerns It is interesting that in an article about Bloomington's coffee houses ("The Simple Pleasures" Jan. 22) staff writer Jenica Schultz failed to mention a huge issue many coffee consumers are concerned with -- fair trade -- coffee that has been fairly traded with the producer, assuring that no matter what the current market value of coffee, the farmers will be fairly compensated to maintain a living wage.

Boys' night out

I always hang out with guys. That's just what I do. I have a handful of close girl friends, and the rest are all guys. I find them easier to get along with, which I think is because I expect less out of them than I do my female counterparts. If they say something ridiculously dense, it's OK. Girls, on the other hand, just irritate me if they can't complete a logical thought. If guys don't clean up after themselves when they cook, I overlook it. I mean, that's a guy for you, but girls should know better by now.
