Fashion show highlights law's lighter side

The apparel merchandising and interior design students aren't the only ones who know what it means to dress to impress. Phi Alpha Delta collaborated with the Black Law Students Association in organizing the first Law School Fashion Show, which took place Saturday at Axis Nightclub. The show featured tons of great styles that were categorized into scenes such as "Business Casual," "After 5," "Holiday Gala," "Business Professional" and "Summer Chic/Garden Party/Golf and Tennis." Students from the Law School strutted enthusiastically down the runway flaunting each ensemble.

Bauder going strong after 10 years

Doug Bauder has been hard at work. As coordinator of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Student Support Services for the past 10 years, Bauder is always prepared to deal with national and local issues affecting students. A student in tears sought help from Bauder last week after the announcement of President George W. Bush's proposed constitutional amendment, which would define marriage as an institution between a man and a woman.

Greyhound bus rolls over on Utah desert highway GREEN RIVER, Utah -- A Greyhound bus rolled onto its side Tuesday on a desert stretch of Interstate 70, injuring 28 passengers and the driver and five seriously, authorities said. The bus driver told the Utah Highway Patrol he either blacked out or fell asleep.

Talkin' 'bout my generation

Washington sniper sentenced to death

MANASSAS, Va. -- A judge rejected John Allen Muhammad's insistence of innocence and sentenced him to death Tuesday, saying his actions in the Washington, D.C.-area sniper shootings leaving 10 people dead were "so vile that they were almost beyond comprehension."

Kerry: No Iraq flip-flop

It has begun -- the presidential campaign of 2004. Now that John Kerry is well on his way to becoming the official Democratic nominee, many are trying to paint him as a serial flip-flopper. In particular, they have zeroed in on his criticism of the war in Iraq as being contradictory to his initial vote in favor. This is no contradiction -- and there is good reason to question whether invading Iraq was the best way to become more secure.

Sorry campus drivers, your opportunity to scare the pants off a helpless freshman pedestrian could be coming to an end. Residential Programs and Services is proposing a crosswalk on Fee Lane to aid University newbies in their daily commute. Future residents of McNutt, Briscoe and Foster may now be able to walk safely from the food court to the bus stop, and back again. The only remaining obstacle is city approval, which could come by this summer.

3 suspects found in BSU shooting

MUNCIE -- Police Tuesday identified a third man wanted in connection with the shooting death of a Ball State University student. Police are looking for Damien B. Sanders, 21, of Muncie. They said he was the third person who accepted a ride from Karl Harford, 20, of Carmel, whose body was found in his own car Sunday morning.

Event celebrates spring break early

The Hillel Center was filled with sand, leis and hamentaschen Monday as Jewish students observed Purim with the first annual "Jews Gone Wild" celebration. Although Purim is an age-old tradition, "Jews Gone Wild" is the brainchild of Hillel Assistant Director Jessie Mallor and social chairs, Elizabeth Rosenberg and Peri Berntsen. The group developed the idea to give Jewish students a way to celebrate their traditions while preparing for spring break.

Doubles duo makes national rankings

Being friends on the court is part of the territory when it comes to playing sports for any team. But the friendship sophomore John Stone and junior Ryan Recht have off the court has led to success on the tennis courts as they achieved the No. 49 national ranking in doubles in late February. In the season thus far, the Hoosier tandem has compiled a record of 10-4 at the No. 1 doubles slot for the Hoosiers. They have done this against some of the top competition in the country and were able to pull off an upset earlier in the season, before they were nationally ranked in defeating Middle Tennessee State's No. 30, Trevor Short and Kirk Jackson 8-4 Jan. 24. Before they achieved national-ranking status, they began the season ranked No. 13 in the Midwest Region and were able to defeat the No. 9 team in the Midwest from Ball State 9-7 -- which paced the Hoosiers in the victory over the Cardinals. Being nationally ranked was a nice feeling for Stone and Recht in light of the hard work from the fall season and carrying it over into a successful start in the regular season, Recht said. "It was a great feeling going through that list and to see our names on there," Recht said. "I wasn't expecting it right away, but it was a good feeling." This isn't the first time the duo played together, as they were able to finish out the regular season as partners last year and were able to compile a 5-6 record, including 3-3 in the Big Ten.

Escape to Amsterdam

Don't get me wrong -- I absolutely love the city of København, despite the dismal weather. However, after spending a week by myself in my host family's home (they were skiing in the Italian Alps), I was ready to get out of the house myself. Since just about every other European destination is warmer and cheaper than København, I was faced with a bevy of options. Where to go?

Double Duty

When Kathy Davis was asked to step into the office of lieutenant governor shortly after the October death of Gov. Frank O'Bannon, she wasn't exactly blindsided. The former mechanical engineer and Harvard M.B.A. had worked closely with Indiana lawmakers in various capacities since 1989, when she served as deputy commissioner for the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Video captures Borden in jail

The Monroe County Jail has released a security video of James Borden being brought into the jailhouse and taken away motionless on a stretcher last November. Borden, 47, died during the process of being admitted into the Monroe County Jail Nov. 6, 2003. The video shows a disjointed series of images from three separate angles of the incident.

Court limits student funds

Theology students hoping for state financial aid may need to look elsewhere. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled March 3 states can refuse to grant financial aid to theology majors. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Supreme Court rejected arguments that banning student aid to theology majors violates the First Amendment's freedom of religion provision and the 14th Amendment's equal-protection guarantees. "Training someone to lead a congregation is an essentially religious endeavor," wrote Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist for the court's majority. "Indeed, majoring in devotional theology is akin to a religious calling as well as an academic pursuit."
