Newest BPP show ready to shock audiences

·

For the Bloomington Playwrights Project, producing tales of morbidity and strangeness is a good way to get college students involved in theater. For years, the South Washington Street theater has produced shows that have entertained the Bloomington community, but lately the company has tried something new to please a larger crowd. The Dark Alley series, which is a series of late-night plays shown at 11 p.m., is the BPP's invitation to a more adult world of entertainment. Often sexual, the Dark Alley series features plays written by experimental playwrights and targeted toward younger, more adventure-seeking audiences.

Give up, turn it loose

·

There comes a time in every person's life when he or she has to let go of certain things they hold dear. Ever since I was a little girl, I have had a hard time letting go of certain articles of clothing. It could be anything -- old shoes or jeans with holes in the bottom.

shaken, not stirred

A martini -- it is the millionaire's beer. The potent drink is crystal clear in color, often with a plump green olive lying at the bottom of the wide-brim stemmed glass. Christine Baranski's wealthy character Maryann Thorpe from the 1995 sitcom "Cybill" was never seen without one. Megan Mullally's character of Karen Walker on "Will and Grace" slurps them down like water.

IU students get the 'bang for their buck'

·

As tuition costs rise across the country, most students do not realize what they are paying for when they send their tuition checks in the mail. Because education has become expensive, it is important for students to get the most bang for their buck -- but it is up to the students to make sure they get that bang.

Around The State

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- A former manager at the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration and three others face criminal charges in a scheme to defraud the state of about $455,000 in job training funds, a prosecutor said Wednesday. Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said a grand jury indicted Matthew Raibley, the former director of an FSSA job training program, on 10 counts -- including bribery, theft, and obstruction of justice. Raibley, 41, allegedly worked with three other men operating a company called Tower LLC. The company claimed to offer training programs at no cost to businesses, but Brizzi said the company billed FSSA for the work without providing any training. Brizzi said the state could be out nearly $1 million as it must also repay the federal government the amount wrongly paid out because of the scheme.

Schools offer scholarship

·

If the personal satisfaction of serving the community wasn't enough, perhaps the $1,000 scholarship will suffice. Thanks to the City of Bloomington's Volunteer Network, ten $1,000 Presidential Freedom Scholarships are currently available to junior and senior students from local high schools who have completed at least 100 hours of community service within the past 12 months. "It's not academic or income-based, it's community service-based," BVN Director Beth Savich said. More specifically, the annual scholarships are available to two students from each high school in Monroe County. Savich said the recipients are chosen by a small panel of community members who must consider both the number of hours an applicant has served, as well as responses to three short essay questions over their experiences. Winners will receive not only the $1,000 scholarship, but also an award certificate, a lapel pin and a congratulatory letter from President George W. Bush.

Fight the power

·

With an election year already upon us, it is nearing that time when we will have to make that most important of decisions. No, it is not which candidate we will vote for -- that would be getting ahead of ourselves. The critical decision is simply this: are you going to get your ass out there and vote?

'Massacre' offers satisfactory slaughter

·

Tobe Hooper's 1974 film, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," is the great-grandfather of the modern horror genre. Four full years before John Carpenter's "Halloween," "Chainsaw," loosely based on the true story of serial killer Ed Gein, broke open the gates for the common hack 'n' slash flick. It is horror's holy grail.
