New Indian prime minister anticipated

·

NEW DELHI, India -- After all the pundits had written off the family dynasty that dates back to the birth of modern India, the legendary Nehru-Gandhi clan has captured the kingdom once again. And its matriarch, Sonia Gandhi, is likely this week to become India's first foreign-born prime minister, further burnishing the family name.

Local nonprofits seek volunteer assistance

·

Though many students who aid local volunteer efforts have left Bloomington for the summer, opportunities still abound for individuals interested in serving the community. The Bloomington YMCA is in need of volunteers throughout the summer. Adapted swim instructors are needed to help facilitate an eight-week program from June 18 to August 13. Volunteers teach people of all ages about swimming, safety, recreation and social skills.

Olsen twins annoy in 'New York Minute'

·

Ah, New York City. Home of Times Square, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty … and two very obnoxious twin girls who run through the city on a "wacky" adventure and, throughout the course of their crazy day, learn to better understand each other. Hugs all around!

Summer bombast needs silver bullet

·

Remember that scene in "American Wedding" where Stifler (Seann William Scott) accidentally feeds Michelle's (Alyson Hannigan) wedding ring to a dog, and retrieves it via the magic of ex-lax? Well, watching "Van Helsing" is sort of akin to that.

'Elephant' one monster of a movie

·

Director Gus Van Sant's "Elephant," winner of the Golden Palm at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival, explores a seemingly typical morning in the life of a group of high school students in Oregon.

Immaturity makes this 'World' go round

·

D12 World? The title fits their raps, which are always either extremely exaggerated or entirely false. Your white boy head honcho is the biggest name in rap right now, but D12's remaining posse still hasn't proven itself, and so is the case with their second LP, D12 World.

Los Lobos breaks out of the ordinary

·

In hindsight, it's perhaps quite unfortunate that Los Lobos' version of Ritchie Valens' "La Bamba" (recorded for the 1987 movie of the same name) was a No. 1 hit; for many casual listeners, it's probably the only way they've heard much of the band.

'Samurai' slices its way onto DVD

·

Sorely overlooked during awards season this past year, "The Last Samurai" arrives on DVD in a sterling two-disc package that doesn't quite live up to the grandeur of the film itself, but is quite impressive nonetheless.

FRESH AIR FLICKS

·

Mark Bowen grins and heaves hard as he hoists his end of a 10-foot projection screen up an inconspicuous pulley that runs up the side of the orange Soma coffeehouse sign overlooking Grant St.

Sea Change

·

My experiences studying and travelling abroad have made me realize, above all else, how much the continent of Europe scapegoats America. If you have not been paying attention, much of the world seems to be in utter chaos -- and for better or worse -- the rationalization that America is in part to blame predominates over here. In Paris, right after the Madrid, Spain bombings, I read a story with a headline reading 'Has Bush's War on Terror Made Us All Targets?'
