'Maria' full of mediocrity

Rarely will a film critic claim a movie is too short for its own good, but that is precisely the problem with "Maria Full of Grace," an intrepid but rather ordinary independent film from first-time director and recent New York Film Academy graduate Joshua Marston.

Tennis flick serves up routine comedy

Working Title Films must have some sort of template they follow when making movies. The British-toned romantic comedy maker that brought us "Bridget Jones's Diary," "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill" just released its newest clone, "Wimbledon," and it's safe to say it's not a far stretch from the three previous films.

Technology makes 'Tomorrow' today

"Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" is a tough flick to review. On one hand, it's a huge step forward as far as cinematic technology goes. On the other, it seems like a movie dreamt up by a nerdy 8-year-old who'd most likely reenact the film's preposterous plot with Legos in his or her bedroom.

In his last address to the Bloomington Faculty Council regarding athletics, former Athletics Director Terry Clapacs listed five major departmental concerns for new AD Rick Greenspan to tackle. The list included football, scholarship costs, gender equity, facilities and the Fair Labor Standards Act. Most of these five concerns relate to one constant problem within the athletics department -- the budget deficit.

Carcasses of pigs, goats and dogs and pieces of smashed furniture floated in muddy streams that once were the streets of this battered city. Desperate people swarmed a truck delivering water.

First multicultural sorority joins IU

Many sororities have ethnic affiliations and a diverse group women in their houses, though few of them are truly defined as multicultural. Theta Nu Xi, Multicultural Sorority, Inc., however, is the first and only of its kind at IU.

Violin stolen from Musical Arts Center

A student reported the theft of a $600 violin from the Musical Arts Center to the IU Police Department Friday. The theft of the violin, which the student was renting from the IU School of Music, occurred Sept. 13, according to IUPD reports.

INPIRG seeks increase in students' political awareness

Fundamentals key to defense

Though the Hoosier football defense has been opportunistic, forcing 10 turnovers, teams have been getting up and down the field averaging 481.3 yards per game, ranking the defense at No. 108 in the country. The past two games have been rough for the Hoosier defense, as they gave up 495 yards to the University of Oregon and season-high 560 yards in a 51-32 to the University of Kentucky.

Yankees take care of Blue Jays for Loaiza's 100th win

NEW YORK -- Jason Giambi homered to end the longest slump of his career, and Esteban Loaiza finally earned his 100th career victory and first for the Yankees, leading New York over the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 Tuesday night. Gary Sheffield hit his 36th home run two days after getting a pair of cortisone shots. Alex Rodriguez almost homered for the Yankees, too, but was robbed on a spectacular catch by center fielder Vernon Wells.
