To be or not to be, that is the question. For IU's Shakespeare systems, the answer is not to be. University Information Technology Services sent e-mails to IU users this week informing them that the Shakespeare and Jewel systems, on which the Pine client runs, will be retired at the beginning of spring semester, eliminating the once-popular textual alternative to Webmail.

HOUSTON -- With only a few seconds left in a certain victory for Miami, Peyton Manning threw a meaningless 6-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Harrison to cut the score to 24-15. The date was Sept. 6, 1998, and Manning had salvaged his rough NFL debut with the first touchdown pass of his pro career.

Suspended Pacers begin NBA arbitration

NEW YORK -- Ron Artest took the witness stand and described, in his words, one of the worst brawls in NBA history. Teammates Stephen Jackson, Jermaine O'Neal and Anthony Johnson did the same, and a union attorney and one of O'Neal's bodyguards also testified. It went on for six hours, with none of the witnesses being cross-examined by anyone from the league office.

After 3 months, NHL talks negotiations

TORONTO -- The NHL and the players' association returned to negotiations Thursday for the first time in three months, looking to end the lockout that has threatened the season. The sides met for about four hours at the NHL's office at the Air Canada Centre, home of the Toronto Maple Leafs, before calling it a day shortly after 3 p.m. The NHLPA invited the league back to the table last week and came with a new proposal.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio State University imposed a one-year ban on postseason play by its men's basketball team. The action is a response to reports of $6,000 the University said former coach Jim O'Brien gave a recruit who never played for the school.

As the search for the new IU football coach continues, more potential replacements have entered the mix, and one has possibly left the game. Early Thursday evening, former Nebraska football coach Frank Solich's agent, Jack Mills, said he didn't think his client was a candidate for the vacant IU head coaching job.

Kmart-Sears merger could impact city economy

When Kmart and Sears joined forces last month in a massive, $55 billion merger, the two companies combined to operate nearly 3,000 locations in the United States. With the aim of challenging industry leaders Wal-Mart and Target for profits, the two retailers are now trying to figure out if that many stores will mean closings, reinventions or other changes in communities like Bloomington where both stores are prevalent.
