AIDS Walk raises funds, awareness about disease

Light rain did not deter the crowd from moving and humming to a rendition of the song “Seasons of Love” Saturday afternoon. The well-known anthem from the Broadway musical “Rent” was sung by the Quarryland Men’s Chorus as part of its performance for the Fourth Annual Bloomington AIDS Walk, a walkathon fundraiser to support the fight against AIDS.

Using IU’s logo a no-go?

When former President Bill Clinton spoke here endorsing Sen. Hillary Clinton, the IU logo appeared behind him in newspaper photos. Because of this, some members of the IU administration expressed concern that people would mistake this as an endorsement for Hillary Clinton. IU Chancellor Ken Gros Louis said the IU trident should not appear at any political events because “it’s just confusing to the public for a political candidate making a speech with an IU logo behind him or her, because it gives the impression that the University is supporting the candidate.”

Earthquake, aftershocks shake Southern Indiana

Residents across the Midwest were awakened Friday by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake that rattled skyscrapers in Chicago's Loop and homes in Bloomington but appeared to cause no major injuries or damage. Aftershocks followed, one with a magnitude of 4.6. LINK:  USGS earthquake map

Dumes commits to Hoosiers

Vincennes University’s Devin Dumes has committed to play for the Hoosiers next year. Dumes is a 6-2 guard who shot just a hair under 40-percent from behind the arc, on the way to setting Vincennes’ single season three-point record with 109.  BLOG:  Basketblog

Belly dance birthday benefits charity

About 50 people gathered at the Bloomington bar Sunday for an evening of belly dancing, the third annual Hatije’s Hafla, benefitting Middle Way House. The band Salaam provided music for the several belly dancing troupes performing at the event.

Did pets predict earthquake?

Mayor Mark Kruzan's dogs seemed to know an earthquake was coming. Moments before Friday's magnitude 5.2 quake shook the Midwest, rousing many residents from their beds, Kruzan said his dogs began barking and awoke him. Then, his home started swaying.
