IU-Notify to primarily use texts

Students who rely on their e-mail for emergency updates from IU-Notify might want to consider signing up for text message alerts after authorities decided Tuesday that text alerts will be the primary notification tool.

Freshmen learn to handle smoking ban

As freshmen Molly Blazak and Stephanie Courtney sat smoking outside the steps at Wright Quad, students passed by eager to eat dinner. After only the second week since move-in, both agreed the freshmen were dealing well as the first incoming class to come to IU with the smoking ban in place.

Tom Morrison on board as chief liaison

Gen. David Petraeus, whose strategy for countering the Iraq insurgency is credited by many with rescuing the country from all-out civil war, stepped aside Tuesday as Gen. Ray Odierno took over as the top American commander of the conflict.

Finding the perfect workout mix

So there I was, bicycling, getting nowhere fast. That’s right, I was at the HPER working out between two rather buff men who periodically glanced at the screen on my stationary bicycle to make sure they were pedaling faster and burning more calories than a 5-foot-3, 110-pound girl.

Emergency Management director forced to resign

John Hooker, director of the Monroe County Emergency Management board, was told by the board Sept. 6 he needed to put in a letter of resignation or prepare to be terminated. Hooker said he was given no specific explanation for his forced resignation. Kathy Dayhoff-Dwyer, south district coordinator for the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, and two representatives from the Homeland Security’s Response and Recovery Division attended the Sept. 5 meeting with Hooker to speak to the board on his behalf.

Face (book) news

I like reading the news, and I browse through it online with the kind of gusto you’d expect from an ex-journalism major.  This takes less and less time each day. As the presidential election draws closer, an increasing proportion of the news is dedicated to either hating on the candidates (Barack Obama’s a member of al-Qaida), loving the candidates (leave Bristol Palin, her baby daddy and her love child alone) or providing irrelevant information about the candidates (do you really want Sarah Palin’s recipe for caribou hotdogs?).

Females and football

Watching the Sunday and Monday football games gets me pumped and ready for football season. As a female who has worked at the IU football games through last year and for this year to come, I can admit that I am very into football. I am someone who feels passionate for all sports, and I look forward to this year’s basketball season as well. But recently when I was at a restaurant, my friend and I sat next to two old-timers who happened to have a different opinion on my love for football.
