marking your place with memories

Buying a new book is like purchasing something new and fresh, but buying an old book is acquiring a treasure. And like so many treasures, with old books there is much more than meets the eye.

The life of an athlete is a lot tougher than I thought it would be. Sure, it has its perks, but being a successful sports icon is no easy task.

Ski and snowboard looking for snow, pumped for winter

·

With winter just a few short months away, it's time to get out those boots, wax up those skis (or boards) and start praying for snow. Most people don't make the connection between skiing and Indiana, after all, this is a state that has a maximum height of just over 1,200 feet.

Don't get ahead of yourselves, folks

·

There's nothing I love more than watching ESPN analysts come up with ludicrous predictions after only three games have gone by in the NFL season. I myself came up with the "very boldest" predictions possible just a few weeks back. But with only three games played so far this season and nearly a dozen games left to go, no prediction is a safe one.

An acquired taste

·

While dining at Tallent, an upscale restaurant on West Kirkwood Avenue, I'm sad to report the service was the lone bright spot. The well-trained staff helped the customers with their needs, but at the same time, the restaurant broadcasts the message that it doesn't care about the customers' needs or desires (It charges a hefty $6 to split a dish.) Now, I have never worked in a restaurant, but I can't think of anything that would justify charging extra money, let alone $6, for sharing a dish.

In this case, two roommates are polar opposites -- one is messy and apathetic, and the other is extremely tidy and nearly neurotic.
