INPIRG weighs in on waste

·

As students finished their meals in Wright food court Wednesday night, they rushed to dump their leftovers in trash bins and hardly noticed the banner on the wall that asked, "How much do you waste?" Each of the bins had been labeled either, "Compost," "Trash" or "Recycle," but most paid them no attention and threw their waste into the closest bin. "We're doing research for INPIRG," senior Vanessa Caruso said "if you could just separate your trash."

What comes in between

·

Studying into the past, that's something we can all profit by." These were the words of an artist. They were the first words he offered to a class studying modern art. Yet for the benefit of all, it might behoove us to consider them in a broader context. Slowly making his way to a small seat at the head of a conference table on the third floor of the IU Art Museum, painter Robert Colescott struggled with those words, but not the ideas.

Djembes and drive-by serenades

·

Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Howie Day and Nickel Creek concert, and I've decided that's the way to go. What are you talking about "that's the way to go?" I mean the whole singing thing. That's totally the way to get girls. Look at Howie Day, John Mayer and Gavin DeGraw. The girls love that kind of stuff. Matt, you can't play guitar. Do you plan on learning any time soon?

Around The State

Wal-Mart's Indiana expansion plans hit another stumble TERRE HAUTE -- The City Council has, at least temporarily, blocked zoning approval for a new Wal-Mart store, the latest stumble for the retail giant's expansion plans in Indiana.

Eat slow, live well, savor life

·

In a country super-saturated with fast food restaurants, political science professor Christine Barbour is striking out on her own and heading up a community chapter of a national response to the fast food dominance: the 'Slow Food' movement. It's a movement emphasizing pleasurable and seasonal eating, a community connection to local growers and producers, and a generally more harmonious life. And in order to bring the Slow Food movement and its way of life to the community at whole, Barbour is helping to sponsor a block-party style event this Sunday, appropriately titled "Slow Fest."

Appearances can be deceiving

·

I got a wake-up call Tuesday night, and in the most interesting of ways. I was forced to remember that appearances can be quite deceiving. There I was at home, watching Cartoon Network and writing a song when a friend sent me an instant message. "You watching Cartoon Network?" she asked.

Court throws Nader off Pennsylvania ballot

·

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A state court knocked Ralph Nader off Pennsylvania's presidential ballot Wednesday, citing thousands of fraudulent signatures including "Mickey Mouse" and "Fred Flintstone."

A martyr to the cause

·

New York Times reporter Judith Miller probably never purposefully set out to become a First Amendment martyr and a credit to the field of journalism, but the government is making it a lot easier for her. Thursday, a federal judge declared Miller in civil contempt of court for her refusal to testify before a grand jury as part of the Justice Department's investigation into who leaked CIA operative Valerie Plame's name to syndicated columnist Robert Novak in 2003.

Fatboy Slim not worth the 'weight'

·

Palookaville, the latest release from Norman Cook -- popularly known as Fatboy Slim -- has finally arrived for fans hungry for new dance-floor beats. It has been four years since Cook released the two million-selling You've Come A Long Way, Baby, which featured mega-hits "Praise You" and "The Rockafeller Skank."

Defining Umphrey's McGee

·

The Rolling Stones say Umphrey's McGee sounds like Phish. Umphrey's McGee has been named by some as the jam band of the Midwest. They relate their style to the legendary Frank Zappa. But if you take Jimmy Page, Jim Morrison and Miles Davis and send them to Jamaica to have a threesome — that's the sound of Umphrey's McGee.

R.E.M. will rock you softly

·

If Out of Time is happily disgruntled in Athens, Ga., then Around the Sun is a settled kind of melancholy in New York City. The album works well as a whole, but overall there just seems to be a lack of color.

Should have 'saved' some special features

·

If a zealous acquaintance has ever condemned your actions, you might find sweet redemption in watching "Saved!" The story focuses on Mary (Jena Malone) who attends a Christian high school and who quickly becomes an ex-member of the Christian Jewels, which is "sort of a girl gang for Jesus" headed by Hilary Faye (a convincing Mandy Moore).

Boneham gives back

·

It's no surprise that Indianapolis' native Rupert Boneham, the son of an IU geology professor and a high school biology and chemistry teacher, often took nature-oriented family vacations. At just three years old, Boneham pitched his own tent, caught his first snake and came home with the realization that he wanted to live in the woods.

Maybe the worst film since 'Kangaroo Jack'

·

I know how much everybody on campus has been waiting for Hilary Duff's new movie, "Raise Your Voice." Many have been counting the days, the hours, even the minutes. Well, the wait is over. You can now go to Showplace 11 and see the movie with the satisfaction that your money will be appreciated by the folks at New Line Cinema.

Can you master the Master's?

If you thought last year's Tiger Woods golf title was detailed and realistic, then this year's game will drop you right on the green, as increased features and new additions make it one of the most layered and complex games on the market.

Billy Bob lights it up in 'Friday Night'

·

With the persistent influx of football movies, it will not be long before the American Film Institute sets aside a genre for these films, and they will probably be called football movies.
