WASHINGTON -- The trust fund for Social Security will go broke in 2041 -- a year earlier than previously estimated -- the trustees reported Wednesday. Trustees also said that Medicare, the giant health care program for the elderly and disabled, faces insolvency in 2020.

IU professor's devotion not forgotten

So many professors are forgotten as many people pass through the giant that is IU, but to Kipchoge Kirkland's friends and colleagues, he will not be. Kirkland, assistant professor since 2002 in the School of Education, died of natural causes Friday, according the education school's Web site. He was 35. Director of Recruitment and Retention at the School of Education Ghangis Carter said Kirkland will be extremely missed.

The result is an array of colorful paintings and drawings that reflect a spirit of history and diversity.

High school shooting suspect ends life after killing 9 others

RED LAKE, Minn. -- The boy accused of killing nine people in a shooting spree first shot his grandfather and his grandfather's companion, then donned the man's police-issue gun belt and bulletproof vest before heading to his high school, where he shot students and teachers at random, authorities said Tuesday.
