Hurricane hits home for campus

Freshman Nicole Album spent the night before her first day of college thinking about home. Specifically, she wondered if it would be standing when she returns. Album is from New Orleans, where she lives a block away from Lake Pontchartrain, beneath sea level and directly in the eye of Hurricane Katrina's projected path.

Dorms empty for Midnight Madness

Sales associates hurriedly handed over carts with wheels already spinning, raffle tickets and maps to busloads of students at Wal-Mart Friday night. Midnight Madness, an orientation program that is part shopping spree, part festival, was underway, and teams of freshmen with dorm keys strung on lanyards swinging on their necks sprinted around the store grabbing pillows, beanbag chairs and 15 cent packets of Ramen noodles. The event lasted from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. as packed buses stopped at eight locations on campus to shuttle the shoppers to and from the late-night shopping mecca.

Oncourse makeover creates confusion

The new Oncourse has more than a fresh coat of paint. The student Web site features new functions to aid in research projects while easing navigation of the essential educational tool, said Brad Wheeler, associate vice president for research and academic computing. Oncourse CL was officially put into place Aug. 14, according to the Web site.

IMU poster sale provides color for barren walls

For five weeks each year, Bill Williams scurries across the country selling posters to college students and raising money for campus groups. By the time he's back home in New York, where he works as an actor and yoga instructor, he's so tired of the decorations that his walls are almost completely bare, save for one small French art print. "It's an intense five weeks," said Williams, estimating he routinely works 16- and 17-hour days by the time selling and stocking is complete. "And after five weeks, the last thing you want to see is more posters."

Books' royalties create stir among faculty, students

Students dish out hundreds of dollars for books each semester. Sometimes they are surprised to find the author of the textbook and the professor share the same name. A mistake? Not exactly. With the wide array of classes available today, professors sometimes find themselves creating their own textbooks to best suit the needs of their course topic. But when a professor requires a student to buy something the professor will receive royalties for, students and faculty are presented with several ethical issues.

Panel approves moving Illinois fighter squadron to Fort Wayne

INDIANAPOLIS - The federal base-closing commission on Friday approved the Pentagon's plan to transfer an Illinois-based Air National Guard fighter squadron to Fort Wayne, a move fought by Illinois' governor. The independent panel voted 8-1 to accept the Pentagon's recommendation to move the Springfield, Ill.-based 183rd Fighter Wing's 15 F-16 jets to the 122nd Fighter Wing station at Fort Wayne International Airport.

Ernie Pyle home demolished

DANA, Ind. - The western Indiana farmhouse where World War II correspondent and former IU student Ernie Pyle grew up has been demolished, shocking preservationists who've worked for years to keep Pyle's legacy alive. The home's demolition in mid-August came after the family that owned it had offered the house to the Ernie Pyle Museum in Dana, the state -- or anyone who would take it.

Broncos send Clarett packing

DENVER -- Maurice Clarett's first stab at the NFL will end the same way his last two seasons on the sideline did: no carries, no yards, one big disappointment. Unable to practice much or play at all during the preseason, Clarett will be released by the Denver Broncos later this week, his agent said Sunday. "The kid called me and let me know they're going to let him go," Clarett's agent Steve Feldman said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. Clarett's pending release also was reported by ESPN.com Sunday.

Bears give Orton starting nod

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Rookie Kyle Orton was in the weight room when he was summoned to head coach Lovie Smith's office and given the news he expected to hear: He's the Chicago Bears' starting quarterback. "I was happy. I wasn't surprised, kind of thought it was going to happen," Orton, a former Purdue star, said Sunday when the Bears made yet another change.

Summer jobs keep IU rowers fit

Giambi breaks out of slump, leads Yankees to victory

Jason Giambi broke out of a 4-for-38 slump with a pair of home runs and drove in seven runs Sunday, leading the New York Yankees to a 10-3 victory and a sweep of their weekend series with the Kansas City Royals. Giambi's 22nd home run came in the third inning against loser Zack Greinke (3-16), and gave him 1,000 RBIs for his career.

Hoosiers off to flawless beginning

The IU field hockey team emerged from its road trip to the Northeast with two victories, opening the season 2-0. The Hoosiers defeated New Hampshire Saturday 3-1 to kickoff the season. Seniors Kayla Bashore and Nikki Orciuch tallied goals for the Hoosiers, with a third goal coming from junior Lydia Schrott.

Women's caucus to honor right to vote

The Monroe County Democratic Women's Caucus will mark the 85th anniversary of women's suffrage Friday at the Women's Equality Day Dinner. IU splits first 2 games in Credit Union Invitational

For 13 years, one thing has remained constant with IU women's volleyball -- the first win of the season. IU head coach Katie Weismiller improved her record of leading the Hoosiers on opening day to 13-0 Saturday when her team knocked off Indiana State. The Hoosiers ending up splitting their weekend series, beating the Sycamores in straight sets (30-24, 30-14, 30-18) before falling to tournament champion Western Kentucky in a five-set loss (28-30, 30-24, 23-30, 30-19, 9-15) during the nightcap of the IU Credit Union Invitational.

US awards 19 IU students Fulbright scholar grants

Upon receiving a Fulbright-Hays grant, one of the most prestigious awards in the world, Angela Martin will now be able to pursue a career in anthropology after completing a year of dissertation research in Zambia. She will live in a tent in a remote village studying the migration and cooperative behavior of co-wives as it pertains to agricultural development. After her field work is finished, she will return to IU to analyze her data and write her dissertation.

Bears agree to terms with Benson

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Running back Cedric Benson ended his 36-day holdout Sunday night, agreeing to a five-year contract with the Chicago Bears. Benson, the No. 4 overall pick in this year's draft, was the last remaining first-round pick to sign. Terms were not available but reports said the Bears had offered a contract that contained $17 million in guaranteed money to the former Texas star.

Recruit Rush passes on Hoosiers for Jayhawks

High school standout Brandon Rush has officially chosen the University of Kansas instead of IU or Illinois, but he isn't officially a member of the Kansas basketball team yet. The 6-foot-6 guard enrolled at Kansas after a 10-day recruiting venture that saw him visit IU, Illinois and Kansas.

IU goes scoreless in losses

The IU women's soccer team began its 2005 season this weekend in California, but its offense failed to start the season's scoring, posting no goals in two games. The Hoosiers took on tournament host University of Southern California yesterday, falling 6-0 to the No. 18-ranked Women of Troy. Two days earlier, IU and Loyola Marymount University played to a scoreless tie, finishing 110 minutes of soccer at 0-0. After two games the Hoosiers stand at 0-1-1 for the season.

Every Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon, local farmers gather in Showers Commons, 401 N. Morton St., and sell their produce. Selections range from the standard tomatoes, corn, watermelons and pumpkins, to more unusual items such as honey, wild mushrooms, herbs, oriental vegetables, persimmons, edible flowers, heirloom peppers, maple syrup and gooseberries.

Cutting it clean

Excuse me while I sound like a sound bite from "Sex and the City." Why is it so hard to back away from the emotion of a relationship? I'll concede it shouldn't be easy to throw away something of substance and even a long sentimentalized version of the past, which can look good compared to the bleakest of presents. But no one can cut themselves clean, which is why the word "baggage" applies to more than airline travel. If you are reading this, then you are probably older than 18. That means you have a romantic past -- at least I hope you have. But why is it that when things go dreadfully sour we can't just cut it clean?
