County records show low student turnout at the polls

The last time Monroe County had an non-presidential national election only 17 people from the Bloomington Five precinct showed up to vote. The precinct, which had 1,281 registered voters at the time, is entirely on-campus -- it includes any land between Fee Lane, Jordan Avenue, 17th and 10th streets. The precinct includes Foster Quad and seven greek houses. Only 1.4 percent of Bloomington Five residents actually voted in the 2002 congressional election.

Workshop gives informatics insight

The IU School of Informatics is working to bring the new age of computing to the next generation. The school hosted 20 computer science students from 10 historically black colleges and universities to a three-day workshop called "Bring IT On!" this weekend, in which participants were encouraged to develop outreach programs for younger students in their respective institutions and communities.

Class discusses how 'Power and Violence' affect life

Many courses offered at IU have titles that are stronger than others, as they tackle issues beyond typical course disciplines. "Power and Violence" is one of those classes, teaching how coercion, persuasion, consensus and dissent operate in the politics and performances of everyday life. The class examines the idea of power and how it is present and active in everything people do or come into contact with.

INPIRG hopes pledge drive nets $13,000

'Bounce 4 Beats' raises about $3,500

Student leaders want vote on general education committee

While a vast majority of faculty and students support the newly approved general education requirements, some opposition exists on how much student input should be allowed on the issue in the future. At an Oct. 3 meeting, the Bloomington Faculty Council passed a proposal that established a core of general education classes and created the General Education Committee, which will make decisions regarding any future changes in general education requirements.

IU finishes 28th in Head of the Charles

The IU women's rowing team finished 28th in the championship race at the Head of the Charles in Boston on Sunday. IU's top coxswain and eight rowers, who comprised the varsity boat, completed the three-mile course in 17:08.314. The team was just shy of achieving its goal of placing in the top 25 crews but clocked in at a faster time than 18 of the other entrants.

Colts, Manning beat up Washington 36-22

INDIANAPOLIS -- Washington knocked Peyton Manning around for a half. Then Manning knocked out the Redskins. After being bent over awkwardly twice in the first half and once appearing hurt, the two-time MVP responded with three third-quarter touchdown passes, leading Indianapolis to a 36-22 victory Sunday.

Hoosiers drop back-to-back matches during weekend

The IU volleyball squad went into this weekend's home matches against Northwestern and Illinois looking to halt a seven-match losing streak. Instead, the Hoosiers dropped both matches to their Big Ten opponents and extended their skid to nine. The Hoosiers lost to the Wildcats three games to one Friday night, then were defeated by the Fighting Illini by the same margin Saturday night in University Gym.

Hoosiers lose battle against rival Spartans

For the first time this season, the No. 13 Hoosiers lost consecutive games. Coming off a similar 1-0 loss to the No. 18 Michigan Wolverines at home, the IU women's field hockey team traveled to the Great Lake state this weekend and was defeated 1-0 again by its Big Ten rival, the Michigan State Spartans. The Spartans (6-11, 1-4 Big Ten), who came into the game without a Big Ten win, were able to beat the Hoosiers thanks to the Spartans' Ashley Pernicano, who scored on a tip-in in the 24th minute of play.

No. 9 IU loses to Penn State, unbeaten streak snaps at 8

The IU men's soccer team fell to conference rival Penn State for the third straight time in Fox Soccer Channel's Game of the Week Friday night. The Nittany Lions needed a lone goal in the first two minutes of the game to snap the No. 9 Hoosiers' eight-game unbeaten streak, defeating them 1-0. Although the Hoosiers out-shot the Nittany Lions 9-5, the cream and crimson were unable to get the tying goal.
