GARY – A painting discovered at an Indianapolis museum is among scores of art works once owned by the city of Gary and its schools that have disappeared, including some by Monet and Rembrandt, officials say.

ArtsWeek kicks off with Arts Leadership award ceremony

A collection of seven individuals, a local business and a historic park will be collecting awards at this year’s Arts Leadership Awards Luncheon presented by the Bloomington Area Arts Council. The luncheon, which kicks off IU’s annual ArtsWeek, is today from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Monroe County Convention Center.

Annual ‘Vagina Monologues’ takes stage this weekend in honor of V-Day

IU’s V-Day campaign will culminate Thursday through Saturday with three performances of playwright Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues.” IU students will present the monologues 7 p.m. Feb. 22-24 at the Whittenberger Auditorium in the Indiana Memorial Union. Tickets are $10 or $8 with a student ID.

O.A.R. to perform for Little 500

This year’s Union Board performer for Little 500 week will be rock band O.A.R., said Union Board concert director Adam Soiref. The pre-sale for the concert begins today at 10 a.m., according to the band’s Web site, www.ofarevolution.com. Tickets will officially go on sale March 1.

Colts RB Rhodes arrested for drunk driving

INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis Colts running back Dominic Rhodes faces a drunken driving charge after state troopers arrested him Tuesday, police said. Rhodes, 28, was pulled over about 3 a.m. driving a GMC truck 81 mph in a 55-mph zone on Interstate 65 on Indianapolis’ far northwest side, Indiana State Police spokesman 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten said.

Hoosiers tie for top spot in weekend tournament

The men’s golf team started its spring season off with a win this weekend in Guadalajara, Mexico at the Club de Golf Santa Anita Classic two-day tournament. The men tied Houston after three rounds, shooting a combined total of 896 (305-287-304). “It was a little disappointing,” coach Mike Mayer said of the tie. “I thought we could’ve played a little better.”

Junior Andrew Landau’s goals for the future might seem unrealistic at first. “I hope to be able to have John Mayer sing at my son’s bar mitzvah,” Landau said. Since starting his own concert promoting business called Innovative Entertainment Concepts, Landau might be one step closer to his dream.

Talk focuses on raising transgender children

At first, they expected her to get over it. Then they told her to act like a boy. At an age when she was expected to play with cars, guns and G.I. Joes, Ashley liked to play with Barbie dolls and wear skirts and high heels. Today she is a happy, little 7-year-old girl, though she was born a boy. “Ashley” is a pseudonym. Because of the nature of the topic, Ashley’s mother, Shannon, wished her daughter’s real name not be used.

Though many nonscience majors in the United States specialize in different fields to stay away from science altogether, they leave college among the most scientifically literate adults in the world, ranking second only to Swedes, scientists found in a recent study.

Michaelangelo’s private room discovered in Vatican

VATICAN CITY – A 450-year-old receipt has provided proof that Michelangelo kept a private room in St. Peter’s Basilica while working as the pope’s chief architect, Vatican experts said. While going through the basilica archives for an exhibit on the 500th anniversary of the church last year, researchers came across an entry for a key to a chest “in the room in St. Peter’s where Master Michelangelo retires.”
