Bahamas trip gives Sampson early look

INDIANAPOLIS – First, Don Bundy had trouble remembering the names of his grandchildren. Now, the 69-year-old Alzheimer’s patient forgets what a dinner plate is and relies on his wife, Carolyn, to remember his age. Since doctors diagnosed Bundy a few years ago, he’s volunteered for several drug studies and brain scans. He knows they’ll help science – but probably not him. “I think it’s an opportunity to help others have a better life, really,” the Indianapolis resident said.

This weekend saw some great Big Ten games, of interest to many Big Ten fans. No. 5 Michigan was embarrassed in the “upset of the century” by the Division I-AA Appalachian State Mountaineers. Back home in Indiana, IU trounced Indiana State to open the season right at The Rock. Unfortunately for anyone outside of the 3.5 million homes reached by the Big Ten Network – including some cable customers in Bloomington and Indianapolis and anyone with a DirecTV dish – the games were only available to those select few with access to the exclusive network.

One hot potato

Remember Mark Foley? He’s the ex-congressman from Florida who left the U.S. House of Representatives amid a sex scandal involving an underage male congressional page. Of course, we know what really happened. In fact a column last year by yours truly highlighted the plight of poor Mr. Foley: he was the victim of a conspiracy to make us believe he was just another hypocritical Republican who opposed gay rights in speech but loved wearing butt-less leather chaps in practice. It appears the vast left-wing conspiracy has struck again, no doubt fueled by its chief instigators Michael Moore and Al Franken. (What the heck, as long as we’re libeling people, let’s throw Hillary Clinton into the mix.)

It’s a mystery to me why the media is still covering the same old stories about Britney and Lindsay. It’s not because I don’t condone celebrity gossip. On the contrary, I think anyone who is an intelligent human being deserves some silly entertainment every now and then. Ain’t no shame. Still, the continued coverage is confusing because these girls have simply lost their touch, and their routines are becoming repetitive. It would be somewhat acceptable if Britney was putting out clubbangers and Lindsay was making good movies again.

I hate exclamation points. If one grammatical matter can give away someone’s lack of writing abilities and inept vocabulary faster than anything else, it’s the use of several exclamation points in a row.

George Strait, Brad Paisley lead nominees for CMA Awards

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – George Strait, who had his 55th No. 1 single this year and was recently inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, was nominated Thursday for five Country Music Association Awards, including entertainer and male vocalist of the year. Strait tied Brad Paisley for the most nominations, and Paisley said he feels honored to share the spotlight this year with Strait, a Texan who debuted in 1981.

Yo La Tengo to play Buskirk-Chumley Theater

The Union Board announced Yo La Tengo will play at 8 p.m. Oct. 10. in the Buskirk-Chumley Theater Tickets for the show went on sale Friday, Aug. 31, and can be purchased at the Sunrise Box Office, located at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. Tickets are $20 for IU students and $25 for non-students.

The SoFA Gallery’s 20th birthday bash Saturday was quite an event. I got there early so I could see the bands play and (hopefully) capture some great and unique styles with my camera. Because this was an art event, I thought I would see a lot of creative outfits, but I was let down a bit. People looked great, I will admit, but I didn’t see anything super special.

Damaged plane lands on highway

BROWNSBURG, Ind. – A small plane landed on a stretch of highway that was under construction Monday after the pilot reported having mechanical problems, officials said. The pilot told officials he was heading to Eagle Creek Airport on the northwest side of Indianapolis when he decided the twin-engine plane would not make it and spotted a section of Ronald Reagan Parkway being built in Hendricks County.

Trekking at Griffy Lake, Bryan Park and everywhere in between, IU students have filled the city this fall with the patter of footsteps and the sounds of heavy breathing at every corner. Saturday’s Second Annual IU Circle of Life event will include both a mini marathon and 5K race on the IU campus. Last year, over 3,200 runners competed in the mini marathon and raised $60,000 for the Bill Z. Littlefield Scholarship for Survivors. As potential participants start to train, however, they usually find that starting is the hardest part.
