Third Wheel

I had a political discussion with a friend of mine the other day. This is not in the least bit abnormal, except for the fact that it was via a Facebook note. My friend was commenting on presidential candidate Ron Paul, and the fact that you, the reader, are probably thinking to yourself right now, “Who the hell is Ron Paul?”

No girls allowed

We’re all about equal rights – for men, women, minorities, religious groups, etc. But every once in a while an issue pops up that just reeks of overzealous political correctness to the point of complete and utter absurdity. A decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit upheld the College of Staten Island’s right to deny official recognition to an all male fraternity because it doesn’t allow women.

After the 2006 mid-term elections, my friend called me to relay the good news about Democrats taking over the U.S. Congress. Ever the cynic, I dismissed her jubilation, claiming that the political stalemate over Iraq would remain the same. As I spoke those words, I hoped that I would be proven wrong.

I just can’t help but feel that the government is using media coverage of Britney Spears to brainwash us via some bizarre subliminal messaging technique. There is simply no other explanation for the fact that I see or hear something related to Britney Spears about every 16.83 minutes.

Peace through Limbaugh

With the 2008 Presidential primaries still months away, voters are already weary of debates and coverage in our new era of an unending campaign season. Since you’re probably as bored with presidential politics as I am, I’d like to divert your attention to another important decision that will be made Oct. 12 : the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize. My pick? The “doctor of democracy” himself, Rush Limbaugh. Yes, that harmless, lovable little fuzzball, affectionately known to millions as “El Rushbo,” has been nominated by Landmark Legal Foundation for this year’s prestigious pinnacle of pacifism.

Campus bus given $5k makeover, red paint job

The new IU bus that was unveiled Monday by WFIU and WTIU managers is sure to turn some heads around campus. The bus was plucked from its ordinary campus route and given an approximately $5,000 makeover. It was painted bright crimson and now has campus radio and television announcements on each side. It made its debut in front of the Radio and Television building before being ordered back to its regular duties Monday afternoon.

Physics, Astronomy departments join for open house

Barrels will be collapsing and professors will be lying on beds of nails with cement blocks on their stomachs Saturday at the Physics and Astronomy Open House. The open house, which the departments have held for 40 years, is used to attract children and teenagers to the field of science, allowing them to see that science can be fun.

Program aims to digitize Nebraska newspapers

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has received a $271,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to become part of the National Digital Newspaper Program. The program is a joint effort by the endowment and the Library of Congress, which are working with agencies in various states to archive digital versions of historical newspapers.

Students crowd Alumni Hall for women’s recruitment kickoff

Throngs of women filled the Indiana Memorial Union Tuesday night, waiting to crowd Alumni Hall and hear about what being in a sorority means at the event, “Greek Opportunities for Women.” The program was the first of many that make up the formal greek recruitment process for women.

IU men's golf finishes fourth in Gopher Invitational

The IU men’s golf team stroked its way to a fourth place tie in the 12-team Gopher Invitational last weekend in Wayzata, Minn. The tournament was hosted by the University of Minnesota and held at the par 72, 7,020-yard Spring Hill Golf Club.

Fantasy Football Week 3

The title of my column could come from any fantasy football owner who drafted a Denver Broncos running back in the last seven years. Bedford man running for Governor

INDIANAPOLIS – A retired firefighter from Bedford has formed a committee to run for governor as a Republican and said he is confident he can gather enough signatures of registered voters to get on the primary ballot. LaRon Keith, 48, said Tuesday that he filed the necessary paperwork to form a campaign committee about two weeks ago, but wanted to wait until he had his platform solidified before seeking any publicity. He must get 500 valid signatures from registered voters in each of the state’s nine congressional districts to gain a spot on the ballot to challenge Gov. Mitch Daniels in next May’s primary election.

2 new ethanol plants give industry boost

Two new ethanol plants opened last week, raising the number of ethanol-producing plants in Indiana to eight. The openings will help Indiana become more secure and self-reliant in the fuel industry, Sen. Richard Lugar said. “Biofuels offer the dual opportunity for an economic revitalization of rural America and a solution to a serious national security problem,” Lugar said in an official statement.

Andrew Bird to play sold-out show tonight

Andrew Bird will perform to a sold-out crowd at 8 p.m. today in the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. This is the first performance of the year for the BCT Concert Series, and it is jointly hosted by the IU Union Board.
