John Vanderslice to play at Waldron

San Francisco-based indie rocker John Vanderslice will play the John Waldron Arts Center at 8 p.m. Oct. 5. Tickets for the show are $5 for IU students and $8 for the general public.

Kanye West dominates 50 Cent by over 260,000 units

NEW YORK – It’s not like Kanye West needed an ego boost, but here it comes, anyway: His “Graduation” album trounced 50 Cent’s “Curtis” in their much-hyped rap sales showdown, selling nearly 1 million copies in its first week, making it the best debut of the year for the struggling music industry.

Business fraternities induct new members

Two greek organizations on campus share the goal of developing their members both socially and professionally. The co-ed business fraternities Alpha Kappa Psi and Delta Sigma Pi completed their induction ceremonies this week. With roughly 60 greek organizations at IU, these fraternities strive to be different from all the rest.

SAE works toward charter, new house

Sigma Alpha Epsilon wanted to rebuild a house and a chapter on campus. But they had to get rid of their old house first, said SAE President Ronak Desai. Demolition on the old Sigma Alpha Epsilon house began on Sept. 10 and is scheduled to finish Friday. Desai said the “eyesore” will be replaced by “a modern house with all the modern amenities,” including Wi-fi internet access and more individual rooms.

The IU Opera Theater will open its 2007-08 season this Friday with Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Rigoletto.” Conductor Stephen Lord, recently chosen by Opera News as one of the “25 Most Powerful Names in U.S. Opera,” will lead the Jacobs School of Music Symphony Orchestra, accompanying two alternating casts of some of IU’s top operatic singers.

State Department’s top auditor under investigation

The labor union representing U.S. diplomats called Wednesday for the State Department’s top auditor to step down pending the results of a congressional investigation into whether he blocked fraud probes in Afghanistan and Iraq for political reasons.

New deli opening creates jobs for college students

Dole recalls bagged salad possibly tainted by E. coli

Dole announced an international recall of all Dole Hearts Delight bagged salad Monday, almost exactly a year after the spinach recall. A bag of the salad was found to contain E. coli through random screening at a grocery store in Canada, according to a press release from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

IU ticket prices rise

Much to the chagrin of senior Hunter Marks, he will have to pay more to get season tickets for the IU men’s basketball team this year. The Los Angeles native has become a Hoosier basketball fan during his first three years in Bloomington, so he will pay the extra $53 for the ticket package.

Freshman dies after suffering allergic reaction

The death of IU freshman Kareem Bacchus shocked his friends and family Tuesday morning, when the 17-year-old apparently suffered a brain hemorrhage caused after being treated for an allergic reaction to something he ate on Saturday evening.
