Hopes remain for Cleveland Orchestra’s IU performance

The Cleveland Orchestra, one of the country’s premier symphonic ensembles, is scheduled to take up residency at the IU Auditorium Jan. 18–20. The residency, sponsored in part by the Jacobs School of Music, will cap off the three-day educational experience with a concert. Students from the music school will have the opportunity to work with various members of the orchestra, including conductor Franz Welser-Möst.

Child locked out of home

A 3-year-old girl is now in custody after being locked outside of an apartment Wednesday in the 500 block of Basswood Drive.

Absentees can vote thanks to new House bill

INDIANAPOLIS – Legislation that would allow Indiana voters to cast absentee ballots by mail without having an excuse, such as being out of town on Election Day, is now before the state Senate.

Police find drugs and shotgun

When officers entered, they smelled burning marijuana coming from the back bedroom of the apartment. They found $247 in cash and multiple clear plastic bags of a substance believed to be marijuana on his person. A notebook, which appeared to be a pay sheet, was also discovered.

General Assembly has beer on the brain

Despite a slew of alcohol law reform bills on the Indiana General Assembly’s menu, it doesn’t appear the state will be any closer to legalizing the sale of alcohol from stores on Sundays by the time the Indiana Legislature adjourns in mid-March.

Business prof crosses the line

The IU community should be disturbed by a blog-post by IU business professor Eric Rasmusen titled “The Standard for Assistant Profs at the IU Dept. of English.” This article, which appeared on Rasmusen’s personal blog, criticized IU English for not hiring enough professors who have earned a Ph.D.

You’re not free in the United States. Don’t get me wrong, though. You have more freedom than elsewhere. As a U.S. citizen, you’re most likely not going to have an agent of the federal government following you across multiple nations with a radioactive weapon to kill you, but that doesn’t automatically mean you should be celebrating. And of course that only holds true if you’re a U.S. citizen. As the last eight years have repeatedly proven, non-citizens may not have the same guarantee.

Police arrest man with harem

An Israeli man has been arrested on suspicion of enslavement, rape and incest, police said Thursday.Police say Goel Ratzon kept 17 women in a state of near-total obedience in the Tel Aviv area. Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said they bore him 37 children, some born to his own daughters.

China tells Web sites to obey its controls

Alexander, Sarkodie taken in MLS draft

Midfielder Eric Alexander and defender Ofori Sarkodie have both been selected in the 2010 Major League Soccer SuperDraft. Alexander was chosen by F.C. Dallas at No. 44 overall while Sarkodie was chosen by the Kansas City Wizards at No. 52 overall.

After losing its best scorer and outside shooter to injury, IU is placing more stake in making the smart play going into its 9 p.m. contest against Michigan. Where IU coach Tom Crean once emphasized pushing the ball up the court and getting quick shots, he’s now making sure his team manages possessions and gets open looks.
