Same-sex couples wed in capital

One bride wore a knee-length lace dress and pearls. The other bride wore a yellow shirt and white suit. And when a pastor pronounced them “partners in life this day and for always” Tuesday they hugged and smiled as wedding guests and nearly a dozen TV cameras and reporters looked on. Tuesday was the first day same-sex couples could marry in Washington, D.C. Brides Angelisa Young and Sinjoyla Townsend were the first of three couples taking the plunge in morning ceremonies at the offices of the Human Rights Campaign, which does advocacy work on gay, lesbian and transgender issues.

College of Arts and Sciences dean resigns

Bennett Bertenthal, dean of the IU College of Arts and Sciences, announced today in an e-mail to faculty and staff that he will resign from his deanship. His final day as dean is Friday.

OSU employee kills one, self in early morning

COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio State University janitor who was about to lose his job walked into a maintenance building for his early morning shift Tuesday and shot two supervisors, killing one and fatally shooting himself.

Taylor Russell has no desire to grow up. The 26-year-old from Cleveland has a job in Bloomington that covers the rent of her one-bedroom apartment, and she can eat food from Denny’s — her favorite restaurant — ’til her heart’s content. Having kids is an abstract concept and having a partner to share her life with is likely too large a responsibility. Play is her reality.

Talks continue while Waldron remains open

Last month, the Bloomington Area Arts Council said it needed $120,000 by March 1 to keep the John Waldron Arts Center open. It’s been a week since March 1 came and went without the BAAC hitting that figure, and the doors remain open.

GameZombie helps student Web production become reality

What began as a small team of video-game enthusiasts has now become an immense Web site production team made up of nearly 80 members, said graduate student Andrew Benninghoff, executive creative director at GameZombie.tv. The site, which is also a student organization, originated from then-IU graduate student Spencer Striker’s project thesis, Benninghoff said.
