Churches mark Ash Wednesday with services across Bloomington

Today, millions of Catholics will celebrate the Day of Ashes, commonly known as Ash Wednesday. The holiday commemorates the first day of Lent in the Catholic calendar. Lent is a 40-day period of fasting and meditation before Easter. Father Charlie Chesebrough of St. Charles Borromeo Church, 2222 E. Third St., said Ash Wednesday is one of the "oldest traditions within Christianity.

Baseball needs major wake-up call

After the "Black Sox" scandal following the 1919 World Series, major league baseball moved along without a hitch until a players strike forced the cancellation of the postseason in 1994. Then it appeared that the national pastime was indeed past its time, but the home run race of 1998 brought fans back to the game. Now, just three years after regaining the interest of many fans, major league baseball is teetering on the brink of its gravest financial crisis.

Workshop to address body image in society

Body images is an issue that continues to trouble both men and women of all ages. IU Women's Student Association, in conjunction with Eating Disorder Awareness Week, will conduct a workshop titled "Love Your Body," where body image in the media and society will be discussed, WSA co-president and senior Angela Bole said. The workshop will take place at 7 p.m. today in the Collins Center Coffeehouse.

RHA candidates begin campaigns

Campaigning for Residence Hall Association executive positions officially began Sunday night after a candidates meeting in the Wright Quad formal lounge. The Residence Hall population will vote on the four main positions within RHA when polls open from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 6 in the residence halls. The four executive positions are RHA president, vice president of student affairs, vice president of programming and vice president of internal affairs.

Outside the swirl of activity surrounding the Secret Sailor bookstore, a group of young people are talking, sharing a big cookie among themselves. On a typical Thursday night such as this, visitors to the bookstore can walk in on a Bloomington Anarchist Black Cross meeting. Participants sit in a circle on old chairs and a beat-up couch. Some are petting John Henry Tofu, a fat black cat with white paws and facial markings. The counter is littered with stickers promoting various bands. The walls are covered in posters, some of them homemade.

2 join mayor in statewide race

Bloomington Mayor John Fernandez isn't the only one with his eye on the Indiana secretary of state office. Two others have made clear that they intend to run for the seat, which oversees business, securities and elections. It will be vacated in 2002 by Republican Sue Anne Gilroy at the end of her second term.

Dorm room rates to increase by 4%

The board of trustees approved a 4 percent increase in room expenses for the 2001-02 school year at its meeting Friday. Only new students will pay the increase; rates will remain the same for returning students. Meal plan prices will remain the same for all students.
