Baker's jazz ensemble pleases crowd

Director David Baker and his jazz ensemble opened with its first concert of the 2002-03 season to a crowd of over 200 Monday night at the Musical Arts Center. The event was free and open to the public. A noticeable number of the jazz lovers in the audience were today's senior citizens who danced to jazz when it first became widespread the way they did to Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey of the swing era. But the main crowd appeared to be IU students out to enjoy a free evening's entertainment.

Where kids pull the strings

The sound of trumpets, cellos and children's voices trickles through Borders Bookstore. Following the noise, one arrives at the store's southwest corner, where a group of parents and kids sit on planet, star and sun-speckled semi-circular steps. Amy Benson, John Richardson and Cheryl Schuster, Bloomington Symphony Orchestra violinists and the objects of the group's enchantment, sit at the bottom.

Arafat compound siege criticized

JERUSALEM -- Prime Minister Ariel Sharon came under wall-to-wall criticism at home Monday for the bungled 10-day siege of Yasser Arafat's compound, which was aborted under intense U.S. pressure. Several Cabinet ministers said Israel underestimated Washington's opposition to the operation and its determination to keep the focus on Iraq ahead of a possible U.S. strike against Saddam Hussein.

Case to go to prosecutor

After 28 months of searching for missing IU student Jill Behrman, officials on the case are preparing reports for the final stage of the investigation before turning them over to the county prosecutor. Within the next several weeks, the FBI and Bloomington Police Department will turn over reports summarizing the entire investigation to Monroe County Prosecutor Carl Salzmann, BPD Detective Marty Deckard said. The summary will include the analytical values of all of the physical evidence found in the investigation, as well as the results of leads and tips, Deckard said.

Preacher will file legal action against IU

Evangelist Jim Gilles said Friday he will take legal action against IU in response to a meeting last Tuesday in which administrators said he was violating the "campus demonstrations, picketing and assembly ground policy." The University instructed him to move from his position between Woodburn and Ballantine Hall to Dunn Meadow.

Little 500 founder Wilcox dies

Iraq fires at US, British warplanes in no-fly zones

WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration criticized Iraq Monday for continuing to fire on U.S. and British warplanes patrolling over two no-fly zones, saying the skirmishes are more evidence of Saddam Hussein's defiance of the international community.

Space for science
