Women falter but improve

·

IU women's golf coach Clint Wallman knew this weekend's Mary Fossum Invitational would be tough, but he couldn't have predicted his team would improve as much as it did and still finish in the back of the pack. "We shot a lot better and scored much better," said Wallman. "The weather threw us off quite a bit. We'll work this week and get ready for next." Senior Shannon Johnson, who tied for the win last week at the Notre Dame Invitational, tied for 13th with a 225 (74-74-77). The rest of the Hoosiers weren't far behind, including a 240 by sophomore Elaine Harris (83-79-78). Behind Harris was freshman Amber Lindgren, playing in only her second collegiate match, who fired a 84-81-77 for a 242 - good enough for a tie for 70th place. The scoring for Indiana was rounded out by a 83-84-84 by senior Katie Carlson and a 82-89-81 by sophomore Kendal Hake.

Students simulate drunken driving at McNutt Quad

Sophomore Megan Moore's vision was obscured by black goggles as she drove a golf cart over several orange cones. Students standing at the McNutt Quad circle drive watched as Moore swerved to miss two IU Police Department squad cars that arrived on the scene. John Summerlot, a residence coordinator for the building, yelled for her to stop. "I can't," she said, laughing.

Athletics plan to eliminate deficits by '08

·

A proposed repeal of the athletics fee could peel fans away from Assembly Hall's courtside seats. IU Athletics Director Rick Greenspan presented a business plan to the IU board of trustees Friday outlining changes to the athletics department's budget. The plan proposes to eliminate the athletics fee, re-allocate some student seats to private donors and increase men's basketball ticket prices. These changes are expected to be approved by the trustees in May and will be discussed further in November.

Athletics department's budget woes have long history

·

A new athletics department plan seeks to end an eight-year streak of red ink. The department has recorded yearly deficits since 1998, according to the reports of former IU Athletics Director Michael McNeely and three independent accountants' reports conducted by advisory firm BKD, LLP, obtained by the Indiana Daily Student.

UNRIVALED

·

For the first time since 1993, Kentucky entered Bloomington with an undefeated IU team awaiting their arrival. And for the first time in four years, the Hoosiers won, 38-14. "It wasn't a perfect game by any stretch, but it was beautiful," IU head coach Terry Hoeppner said. "We just whipped the Wildcats."

Hoosiers ready for Big Ten play to begin

·

Fifty-two minutes and 11 seconds into Sunday's match, the IU women's soccer team and the Bowling Green State University Falcons were tied at zero. Eighteen seconds later, the Hoosiers had scored two goals and taken a 2-0 lead.

IU freshmen impress coach at Invitational

·

Head coach Lin Loring entered the Western Michigan Invitational with the mindset that the weekend would be like an audition for his Hoosiers. The four returnees would give up the high singles positions for work on their doubles game, while four freshmen would acquire those positions for a "tryout." But the IU women's tennis team far exceeded its coach's expectations.

Women win Intercollegiate title

·

On Friday afternoon, the IU women's cross country team proved just how strong it is. Even without their top runner, junior Jessica Gall, the Hoosiers won the Indiana Intercollegiate meet in convincing fashion. The team placed four runners in the top 20 en route to the victory. The Hoosier women began the race by remaining in a pack and staying just off of the pace.

Welcome home, warriors

·

The Walk. It hits you right away like a warming sensation throughout your body. It covers the goose bumps, which have grown their own goose bumps, and curls the corners of your mouth upward into a smile. At first, your legs start to lose control. It is such a sudden rush, unexpected even, that your heart hurts. What is it? It is the feeling of appreciation, approval, support and encouragement. It is the feeling that people care. Years had passed, and it seemed to the people of Bloomington, that no one had heard a word from the football team it so desperately wanted to identify with. A win here, a loss there, but for the most part, nothing had united the country of the cream and crimson. Until "The Walk."

Nguyen rises in Hoosiers' dramatic weekend

·

The IU roster might have changed during the course of a year, but the defending national champs proved they still have the same flare for dramatics in this weekend's Oregon State Diadora Classic in Corvallis, Ore. IU shutout No. 16 California State-Northridge 5-0, then dominated the stat sheet for 55 minutes against tournament host Oregon State University, only to trail 2-0. But with 35 minutes remaining, the weekend was far from over. Junior forward Jacob Peterson cut the Beavers' lead in half in the 56th minute of play when freshman forward Lee Nguyen redirected a pass from senior midfielder Mike Ambersley to Peterson, who tallied his fifth goal of the season. "Lee has been finding me lately and giving me opportunities," Peterson said. "I'm glad I was able to get one for him finally."

Colts use 'D' to rough up Leftwich, Jags in win

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- It's not every day the Indianapolis Colts win in a low-scoring dog fight, where they depend on their running game and defense to get the win. Glimpses of the changing times were seen in the Colts home opener, as it was Peyton Manning and the offense on life support while the Colts' defense led the team to a 10-3 victory over Jacksonville Sunday.

Men close strong, finish 6th

·

Even though par was hard to come by at the Gopher Invitational this past weekend, the IU men's golf team closed strong with a sixth place finish. Only nine of 66 players finished in red numbers Sunday while the rest of the field succumbed to the challenges Spring Hills Golf Course had to offer. None of the Hoosier golfers were able to finish under par to close out the tournament, but freshman Jorge Campillo put forth a strong effort, posting a 1-over-par 73. Campillo finished tied for 14th with a total of 221. Campillo's finish marks his second top 15 finish in only his second start. The Hoosiers, as a team, combined for 902 strokes. The University of Washington finished tied with Minnesota, whose totals were 883 strokes. Niall Turner of Minnesota, who was the only player in the tournament to finish under par with a one-under 71, was the tournament's individual winner.

Running wild

·

On Aug. 6, IU senior offensive lineman Isaac Sowells did something his head coach didn't appreciate. He guaranteed an IU win over Kentucky. "I told him not to do that again," IU head coach Terry Hoeppner said. "Unless you can back it up." Sowells and the Hoosiers did exactly that Saturday, rushing for more than 300 yards and passing for four touchdowns en route to a blowout win over interstate rival Kentucky, 38-14.

Despite clouds, Moon Fest brings community together

·

Though the clouds hid the moon Friday night during the Moon Festival at the Asian Culture Center, the people in attendance didn't seem to mind. From toddlers to grandparents, there was something for everyone. The ACC served moon cakes filled with red bean paste or lotus seed paste, hot green tea, hot chocolate and s'mores. The Taiwanese Student Association began the evening with a game that is a combination of charades and telephone. Five participants had to relay Moon Festival-specific messages, including "moon cake," "rabbit," and "lantern," by using body language and hand signals. Each participant passed the message down the line, until the last contestant had to guess the word.
