Myers' family helps prosecution's case

MARTINSVILLE -- Prosecutors continued to build their case against murder suspect John R. Myers II Saturday by calling his family to testify against him. Myers' grandmother, Betty Swafford, broke down in tears while recounting a conversation she had with him in November 2004.

In southern Indiana, autumn means big tourism bucks as people from all over the Midwest pack restaurants, hotels and festivals while enjoying the changing of the seasons. "As the leaves change color, business explodes," said Doug Baird, Brown County State Park manager. The park -- about 20 miles east of Bloomington -- receives one-third of its yearly revenue in October, he said. Baird credits the beauty of the season for the influx of visitors. "The park and surrounding area is such a vast plot of land," Baird said. "We can see out into the hills for miles and miles." Brown County Inn takes advantage of the business increase each year.

MARTINSVILLE -- Witnesses testified Monday that John R. Myers II had knowledge of the area near Paragon, Ind. where hunters found the remains of murdered IU sophomore Jill Behrman in 2003.

4 IU swim team members arrested for multiple crimes

Four members of the IU men's swimming and diving team were arrested early Sunday morning for vandalizing several cars on campus, according to an IU Police Department report.

In Monday's sports story, "IU pounded by No. 1 Ohio State, drops to 4-4 overall," the quote, "This is the No. 1 team in the nation, and we knew that coming here. We didn't expect to come in here and put them away early. We knew they were the No. 1 team coming in here, and we didn't play like we knew we were playing the No. 1 team," was incorrectly attributed. The quote was actually from freshman quarterback Kellen Lewis.

Chief U.N. envoy to Sudan leaving after being ordered out

KHARTOUM, Sudan -- The chief U.N. envoy to Sudan planned to leave the country Monday after the government ordered him out for saying its forces had suffered two major defeats in fighting in the Darfur region, a U.N. spokeswoman said. Jan Pronk was scheduled to fly to New York for a meeting with Secretary-General Kofi Annan, said spokeswoman Radhia Achouri, who did not give further details.

Greek students serve up Katrina relief in Mississippi

Last weekend a group of 50 IU students traveled to Gulfport, Miss., to aid Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The group, composed of greek students from 10 chapters on campus, volunteered at God's Katrina Kitchen, a nonprofit organization, serving meals to displaced families and helping the organization move its campsite to a new location.

Online Only: PETA hates animals

On the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' Web site, the group proudly claims it has spayed and neutered thousands of pets. PETA claims it is helping end the suffering of hundreds of thousands of cats and dogs by preventing them from reproducing. It seems ironic that an organization that allegedly fights for animal rights is taking away the rights of animals to reproduce. Apparently, PETA hasn't even asked the animals whether or not they wanted to have a sterilization surgery. What if cute little Fluffy wanted to have kittens? So much for carrying on the family name.
