How one frat ruined Christmas

·

Holiday parties are boring.  They’re just sad get-togethers where you eat snowman-shaped sugar cookies and moan about the weather.  College students try to make it fun with ugly Christmas sweaters and a lot of peppermint Schnapps and we’re more inclined to complain about exams and final projects and how little sleep we’ve had.  But even that gets boring.

We need a renewed focus on CAPS

·

As this semester ends, I find myself continually reflecting on a few things. The Indiana Daily Student ran two pieces about student well-being and sexual violence on campus that were insightful, but filled me with a sense of frustration and hopelessness. Even in my classes people expressed anger.

So long, farewell

·

I don’t feel qualified to write one of these, a “goodbye column.”   I need to be older, wiser.

Dead week is anything but

·

The week before finals is supposed to be free of any major exams in order to give students free time to study for finals week.

The pleasure is mine

·

The representation of sexual pleasure in pornography is often skewed and offers an unrealistic representation.

Do away with minimum wage laws

Isn’t it interesting that we think that some government entity can best decide what is the appropriate minimum wage for every organization in the country.

Dear people who question Jackie

With regards to the Rolling Stone article about UVA - what is now up for debate: Whether Drew was a member of the fraternity. Whether Drew was a lifeguard. Whether the fraternity had a social event on the books that night. Some other inconsistencies in Jackie's story My responses, in order: Why does this matter if it occurred at the fraternity and included other fraternity members?

Open letter of support for the Black Student Union at IU-Bloomington

We stand with the people around the country calling for justice and racial equality in American society.  Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel once said, “the opposite of good is not evil, the opposite of good is indifference.” He said this to wake up the masses during the Civil Rights Movement to bring people to their feet and combat racial inequality.

'We can't breathe'

·

Last Friday, Indiana University joined the national movement in protesting against the grand jury’s ruling to not indict white police officer Darren Wilson for the death of Michael Brown, an African-American teenager.  The rally demonstrates the student body standing in solidarity with the protestors in Ferguson, signaling that IU students too, believe an injustice was carried out at the expense of a life.  Although the possibility of a criminal case against Wilson is no longer an option, http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/08/13/us/ferguson-missouri-town-under-siege-after-police-shooting.html  the death of Brown has resulted in the nation taking a hard, but ultimately positive introspective look at what exactly lines the fabric of American society today.  In the wake of Brown’s death, police brutality has risen to the national limelight.

Lyndsay Jones, 22, stands in front of the Pour House Cafe on Kirkwood Ave. on Nov. 8. During her first semester at IU in 2013, she was sexually assaulted by her friend at his apartment. After completing her sophomore year at IU, she returned to Lafayette to earn enough money to return to classes at IU in the spring. She used to hang out with her friends at the Pour House and still stops by when in town to visit with friends. Lyndsay reported being sexually assaulted to the Office of Student Ethics and participated in a hearing, but her case resulted no finding.
