Letters to the editor

IUSA elections are a joke The IUSA elections are a total joke. First, I have to say how obnoxious it was to have four separate groups of IUSA campaigners knock on my door after midnight last night trying to get me to vote, despite the fact that I was sleeping. When I did try to vote, I found that the IUSA site was so swamped with people that just getting my vote through took more than half an hour.

Powerhouses to compete

·

Twenty-seven days ago at qualifications, the field for the women's Little 500 was set. Today, the field will be set loose to determine the 2002 women's Little 500 champion. "It's going to be an awesome race," IU Student Foundation assistant director and Little 500 coordinator Alex Ihnen said. "I think the race is going to be really competitive. The field is wide open. The returning championship team has maybe the strongest rider on the track, but a number of other teams are deeper.

Independence necessary

·

Graduate and professional students have little to gain by remaining part of the IU Student Association. The Graduate and Professional Student Organization has recently drafted a constitution to break off from IUSA and declare itself an independent arm of student government. IU academic departments with graduate and professional student enrollment must ratify the constitution; the IDS encourages them to do so. Issues that are most pressing to graduate and professional students differ widely from those affecting undergraduates.

Hoosiers continue win streak

The women's tennis team stretched its winning streak to four with a dominating 6-1 victory against Purdue Sunday in West Lafayette. This was the first conference road victory for the Hoosiers in three tries. "I think we played a very good match today," coach Lin Loring said. "I was especially pleased with our overall singles effort. This win gives us a four-match win streak as well as evens our record in conference play at two."

Hagegård and Jones dazzle audience with brilliant performances

·

After a prolonged silence, a rapturous standing ovation greeted Håkon Hagegård and Warren Jones at the conclusion of a concert where the collaboration between singer and pianist attained the highest limits of artistic achievement. In a sold-out Auer Hall on Friday evening, these two musical giants demonstrated firsthand how magnificent a song composer Franz Schubert truly was, and how emotionally powerful Schubert's music can be.

Folk Festival

·

In a world of boy bands, teen pop stars, and manufactured rock groups, it's easy to see how mainstream music has become commercialized. Instead of the plaintive voice of Joan Baez calling for peace and equality, we have Britney Spears calling to "party, party!" If you've grown tired of the MTV scene, head out to the World Folk Festival this Saturday in Bryan Park to experience something completely different.

Iowa ekes by IU for Big Ten tourney win

·

CHICAGO -- Even the announcement that IU is seeded No. 4 in the NCAA men's basketball tournament couldn't cheer up the Hoosiers after they lost 63-61 to Iowa in the Big Ten championship game. "Some of the coaches had a sigh of relief," junior center Kirk Haston said. "And the players are pleased that we finally got the respect we deserve." The Hoosiers haven't been ranked in either the AP or Coach's Top 25 polls all season. But the NCAA tournament selection committee ranked IU in the top 16 teams in the country by making it a fourth seed.

A U-turn on the road of life

·

I made it to Toledo before I finally lost my mind. I thought that was quite an accomplishment, considering I had survived the drive through the wastelands known as Buffalo, Erie and Cleveland. (Ignore Drew Carey. Cleveland most definitely does not rock.)

Consider adoption over abortion

·

I am writing in response to opinions on abortion (Abortion Head to Head, March 7). Anyone who feels that the baby is not alive in the women's womb is ignorant.

Educating the American people

·

o I finally go open the rickety mailbox marked number five, that probably hasn't been gone through in more than a week. Amid way too many pizza specials, advertisements and "deals" from Circuit City, I find the postcard of precautionary measures sent out by the U.S. Postal Service. Thanks for the warning, guys, and the proper measures to take to avoid any potential anthrax harm, but isn't this getting a little excessive?

Misplaced blame unnecessary

·

Jack Handey, the Saturday Night Live well of wisdom, once said, "If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is 'God is crying.' And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is 'Probably because of something you did.'"

Volunteers bring joy to local nursing homes

·

Easter arrived early to Hospitality House, 1100 S. Curry Pike, and other local nursing homes Sunday. Salvation Army volunteers visited five area nursing homes to distribute more than 500 stuffed bunnies to individuals residents. Nursing home residents were peppered throughout the corridors with walls of pastel blue and pink laced with large-petaled flowers awaiting the arrival of Salvation Army volunteers.

Irish defeat Hoosiers 1-0

·

This season the No.6 Hoosiers have prided themselves on a stifling defense, shutting out eight of the last ten teams they have faced. The backs have been known for smothering the opposing offense as it enters IU territory. Goalie Colin Rogers, with the lowest goals allowed average in the nation at .40, rarely lets the ball touch the back of the net.
