Three Minute Mile on the rise

·

In the few short years since its formation, Three Minute Mile has risen to prominence as a well-known Bloomington band. How does a college band that relies on original music not only survive in Bloomington, but often draw an even bigger crowd than the cover bands? It has to do with they way it treats its fans, said Dan Duncan, one of the owners of Vertigo, 107 W. Ninth St. "Three Minute Mile are very approachable," Duncan said. "Most bands don't want to be bothered before and after the shows. They're willing to talk to the fans."

World issues do affect your life

·

There is a war in the Middle East that affects most of our lives in a direct way. And many might not even realize it. The problems in the Middle East have been around since before Christ's time on earth, and it is very optimistic to think that in the next few weeks and months we will find a quick fix. But why should regular Joes in Bloomington be concerned with a bunch of crazy Palestinians and Israelis running around trying to blow one another up?

'Hard Candy' a sweet treat for summer

·

Admittedly, about a month ago, when I first heard "American Girls" on the radio I got a little worried. Don't get me wrong; it was nice to hear new material from Counting Crows. I thought the tune was catchy, but the first few times I heard it the words glossy and commercial came to mind. My prior experience provided hope. I reminded myself that as a general rule, the first single released by Counting Crows is never a great barometer for the rest of an album, and I couldn't have been more right.

Women open against Bearcats

·

Tonight's season opener with Cincinnati at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis is important for the women's soccer team for two reasons. First, there's a measure of revenge involved for the Hoosiers who lost last year to the Bearcats on an own-goal in the 54th minute.

Appeals filed in Knight suit

·

Both plaintiffs and defendants in a lawsuit charging IU with violations of Indiana's Open Door Law are appealing a ruling by a Jeffersonville judge. Last month Special Judge Cecile Blau said IU President Myles Brand had the authority to fire former men's basketball coach Bob Knight. She also said the plaintiffs, a group of 46 fans, may pursue their claim in court.

Trike race offers excitement, but not seriousness

·

For those who wanted to be Little 500 riders but didn't want to put in the time, there's the Mini 500. The Mini 500 is the tricycle race tonight that brings together the seriousness of the actual race, with the humor of crazy costume designs and team presentations.

A tale of 2 freshmen ...1 semester later

·

Marshall and Meyer are still young, 18 and 19, but no longer new to IU -- at least not brand new. They still live in Wright and have made it through the first semester of dorm life. They are still best friends. They are still blond and still cute, though the onset of the Indiana winter has left them slightly less tan than the beginning of the school year found them. They are both still planning on being doctors and both still working hard to do well in their challenging first year of chemistry and calculus classes.

Curing summertime boredom

·

I'm bored. This isn't right. Joe Grace is not supposed to get bored. Joe Grace is supposed to be chasing wild chipmunks. Joe Grace is supposed to be rolling down hills collecting chiggers on his merry way. Joe Grace is not supposed to be writing in the third person -- but he is doing it anyway.

Single Valentine's Day

·

So, it's that time of year again. That time when everything changes to pink and red. Little paper hearts and cutout cupids stick to store windows and the silver wrappers on Hershey's Kisses become a red shiny color. Flower shops are overrun with orders and candy stores stock up on those little pastel hearts, each engraved with their own hot pink message, urging the receiver to "be mine" or telling them that they are "hot stuff." A time of year to show your significant other that you love them.
