Influenza a threat; vaccines help

It is over 20 million people dying in a terrifying pandemic in 1918. It is a 2002 IU student sick in bed for a week with high fever and cough missing classes and activities. It is a tiny pin prick and a few seconds of discomfort in the arm. What is it? Influenza: the disease and the vaccine. Influenza is a sudden and severe viral infection with fever of 102 and higher, cough, severe muscle aches and extreme exhaustion, which lasts one or two weeks. This disease is very different from the common cold and other viral illnesses sometimes called "the flu." It is highly infectious with complications accounting for more deaths than any other vaccine preventable disease and 14,000 hospitalizations annually.

Media views differ among ages

Younger and older generations perceive sex and violence in the media differently, according to a study conducted by a collaboration of political science professors at universities including IU. Edward Carmines, the Warner O. Chapman professor of political science at Indiana University, along with colleagues from the University of California at Berkeley, conducted a research project funded by a grant from the Pew Charitable Trust. "We have been trying to find a vehicle to study the political opinions and civic engagement of adults, as well as young adults," Carmines said. "We wanted to see if their opinions on different kinds of political and social topics were similar or different." The telephone survey of approximately 1,250 people ages 15 to 92 revealed that views on sex and violence on television constituted the largest difference between older and younger generations.

Harriers provide solid performance

Terre Haute -- The men's cross country team competed here Saturday to take on the nation's finest at the Pre-Nationals meet. The team placed fourth in their heat of 35 teams, led by three redshirt freshmen.

Women stake their claim at Pre-NCAAs

Going into this weekend's Pre-NCAA 6k Meet at Indiana State University on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, the women's cross country team was ranked No. 30 in the FinishLynx national cross country poll. After all the runners had finished the race, a solid showing by the team was had. The Hoosiers finished eighth out of the 38 teams in the race.

Hoosiers sweep Evansville

The IU men's swimming and diving team swept the University of Evansville on Saturday to open their season at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center. Under the direction of first year Coach Ray Looze Jr., the Hoosiers won by sweeping all 32 events with a score of 320.50 to 209.50.

3 Indiana cities make list of ten 'unhealthiest' US towns

In its third annual survey, SELF, a women's health and fitness magazine, has dubbed Indianapolis the second unhealthiest city, with South Bend, sixth, and Gary, 10th, following shortly thereafter. Meg D'incecco, from SELF magazine's public relations department, said the survey encompassed a large number of areas affecting women, but that the Indiana cities failed the survey because of the general health of the female population. "In this survey, we took the 200 largest metropolitan areas in the country and looked at statistics from violent crime, rapes per minute, exercise time, number of toxic sites in the area. So just in general a very, very wide range of lists that we got from an advisory board of experts," D'incecco said.

Ice Hockey begins season

The IU ice hockey team will face off Friday and Saturday against the University of Dayton Flyers in the first regular-season matchup of the year. For the past eight seasons, IU has made it to the ACHA final four. This year's team is hoping that this series is the beginning to another successful season. "We're really anxious to see what happens on the ice, and have a little fun, too," forward Tom Orr said. "It's what we've worked for the last month or two." Dayton comes to Bloomington to resume a rivalry that started when both teams were members of the now-extinct MCHL. Dayton is the only former MCHL team that IU has kept on its schedule since joining the Great Midwestern Hockey League in 2001. IU holds the series edge 27-3-1.

Brehm declines candidacy

Chancellor Sharon Brehm got a shock when she picked up the IDS Thursday morning to find that she was a candidate for the interim presidency. The interim president will be replacing President Myles Brand when he leaves IU in January to head-up the NCAA. After the discovery, Brehm immediately sent an official letter to IU board of trustees president Frederick F. Eichhorn assuring him that although she was flattered by the nomination, she would have to pass on the job.

Dorm rooms safer if doors are locked

Shootings too close to home for two IU professors, fathers

Rowing team splits for weekend meets

This weekend, the women's rowing team will be sending boats to two different regattas. The varsity eight left Thursday for Boston for the Head of the Charles Regatta while the rest of the team will be headed to Indianapolis Saturday for the Head of the Eagle Regatta.
