Job market improves for December grads

Searching for a job mid-year might seem difficult for December graduates, but career advisors say not to worry. Arlene Hill, associate director of the arts and sciences placement office, said while the job market has been slow in the past, she is seeing a recovery. "(The market is) still fairly tight," she said, "but jobs are available in all industries."

Downtown lights up for the holiday season

With the flick of a switch, downtown Bloomington became illuminated by over 278,000 lights Friday at the 18th annual Canopy of Lights, the kickoff to holiday events in the downtown area.

History lesson comes from Grant Street Inn

In a town that can never have too many hotel rooms, there is one bed and breakfast that prides itself on being a little different. Tucked in at the corner of Seventh and Grant Streets, the Grant Street Inn almost blends in among the rest of the houses until you turn the corner and notice the three adjoining buildings, all in matching yellow.

Miller Showers Park close to completion

The construction between College Ave. and Walnut St. has looked more like a giant sandbox rather than a storm water treatment park since construction began. When the Miller Showers Park project started in April 2002, an idea of turning the existing park into an environmentally friendly space and beautiful public place seemed far down the road.

Team lands five top recruits for next year

The IU men's swimming and diving team got a huge boost this fall with the signing of five new recruits. The class, considered by some to be among the best in the country, includes two swimmers from Indiana, one each from Kansas, Ohio and Michigan.

Jefferson, Powers take All-American honors at Championships

Heading into the NCAA Cross Country Championships Nov. 24, the most important thing for senior Chris Powers and sophomore Sean Jefferson was the team's success. Although the team fell just short of a top-10 finish and the highest place in school history, it was a good day individually for Powers and Jefferson.

Starting center Leach out after Saturday knee injury

Senior center George Leach suffered a left knee injury in Saturday's 80-77 overtime win against Xavier at Conseco Fieldhouse. The injury leaves him out indefinitely. Leach came down awkwardly on his left knee after attempting to block a shot by Xavier guard Lionel Chalmers. He underwent an MRI Saturday night and it was decided that he would be sidelined until he recovers. Trainer Tim Garl, Dr. Larry Rink and Dr. Steve Ahlfeld will be working with Leach to rehab his knee. "I definitely plan to come back," Leach said in a statement. "Tim, Dr. Rink and Dr. Ahlfeld will make sure I get the right treatments and rehabilitation so that I can come back later this year." A starter of the team's first three games this season, the 6-foot-11-inch Leach has averaged eight points and had a season-high eight blocks at Vanderbilt. He ranks fifth in IU history with 155 career blocks.

NCAA declares Yeagley Division I all-time winningest soccer coach

Coach Jerry Yeagley called Sunday's 5-0 victory in his last home game something he would remember very fondly. Yeagley was not being modest; actually, he had no idea. Due to a recently discovered records error, the NCAA has declared Yeagley the all-time winningest coach in Division I soccer history, making IU's 5-0 third round win over Virginia Commonwealth Sunday the record-breaking game. Yeagley captured his 541st victory, passing former University of San Francisco coach Stephen Negoesco, who is now only credited with 540 wins down from 544. In 1978, the NCAA discovered an ineligible player on the San Francisco squad, negating four tournament victories -- including the 2-0 national title victory over Yeagley's IU team.

Community remembers AIDS victims

Names of fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, friends and colleagues and even complete strangers were read at the Trinity Episcopal Church last night. Each of them was a victim of the AIDS pandemic, and students and members of the community gathered to pay their respects on World AIDS Day.

IU to combat spam on servers

IU is planning to spend $300,000 in the coming months on a new software program that will combat spam e-mails on the IU server. University Information Technology Services will implement the "Pure Message" anti-spam system by February 2004 that will block spam messages from being sent to IU e-mail accounts.

Stocks surge on strong manufacturing numbers

NEW YORK -- Investors sent stocks surging Monday, propelling the Dow Jones industrials up more than 115 points and into the shadow of 10,000 after a pair of reports showed better-than-expected growth in the nation's manufacturing sector and construction spending. Retail stocks dipped although stores had solid sales over the Thanksgiving weekend.
