Government says security threat over

WASHINGTON -- The "specific and credible" terrorist threats that led to the cancellation of seven flights, including ones to the Super Bowl, have passed, and there are no plans to ground any more, government officials said Monday.

Bush orders investigation of WMD intelligence failure

Interior design students create art

Inspiration can come from almost anywhere. Students in the interior design program learned their personalities greatly affected their designs when recently completing projects for a statewide competition. The contest was put on by the International Interior Design Association. Seniors participating in the interior design project created 26 chairs as part of a class required for their major. It is mandatory for seniors in Cynthia Landis' senior studio H476 Interior Design VI to enter the annual competition.

A Very Brady Ending

HOUSTON -- Houston, we have a champion. And once again, the New England Patriots have Adam Vinatieri's foot to thank for a Super Bowl victory. Vinatieri gave New England its second NFL championship in three seasons with a 41-yard field goal with four seconds left for a thrilling 32-29 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday night. Vinatieri earlier missed a field goal and had another one blocked. But as he did in 2002 when he kicked the winning field goal to beat St. Louis on the final play of the Super Bowl, he proved he is perhaps the NFL's best clutch kicker.

Chandler, Curry still developing for Bulls

Give them time to develop and the two could be the best big men in the East -- and the cornerstone of a new Bulls dynasty.

Grand times for Federer in Australia

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Roger Federer skipped the sobbing this time. He is, after all, getting familiar with the honor: Grand Slam tournament champion. Playing shrewd and confident tennis that has left him at No. 1, Federer won the Australian Open 7-6 (3), 6-4, 6-2 Sunday against a weary and frustrated Marat Safin.

IU drops third game in a row

With 1:05 left on the clock and IU down 69-57, junior Jenny DeMuth has already labored for 39 minutes and is on the free throw line. She sinks both free throws and goes on to score seven points in the final minute of the game. But DeMuth's efforts weren't enough, as IU fell to Ohio State 71-65. The loss drops IU to 3-5 in the Big Ten and 10-10 overall, while OSU improves to 4-4 in conference action and 12-7 overall. The first 15 minutes of the contest was back-and-forth, with neither team gaining more than a four-point lead.

Needing wins down the stretch, the IU club hockey team went on the road with hopes of knocking off two division opponents. But a relentless offensive attack by Michigan State gave IU all they could handle, as the Hoosiers dropped one to MSU before defeating Ferris State 8-4.

Elway, Sanders elected into Hall of Fame HOUSTON -- The stirring comeback and spectacular escape were unnecessary this time around. John Elway and Barry Sanders were elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame without a sweat. As expected, two of the NFL's most dominating and exciting players made it in Saturday on their first attempt. Elway, the king of the comeback, and Sanders, the master of escape, cemented their status among the all-time greats and were joined by Bob Brown and Carl Eller.

Trustees approve Cronin for SLIS dean

The board of trustees approved Blaise Cronin as the new dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences Friday. This decision comes exactly one year after Cronin originally stepped down from the dean's position. Cronin served as SLIS dean for 12 years and brought the program national recognition during his tenure. Last January, he decided to take a year-long sabbatical but remained a member of the faculty. "I don't think it's unusual for deans to take leave of absences," trustee Patrick Shoulders said in a previous Indiana Daily Student article.

5-game winning streak ends for IU

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Losing for the first time Saturday since its 34 point loss at Wisconsin Jan. 6, the IU men's basketball team fell to second place in the Big Ten after its 84-72 loss to Michigan State. "Michigan State is really good," IU coach Mike Davis said. "I told the guys that before the game."

Powers highlights Missouri meet The men's track team turned in a number of solid performances Friday night at the Tiger Classic in Columbia, Mo. The men's highlight came in the form of junior All-American Chris Powers, whose 8:13.46 season debut in the 3,000-meters garnered him a victory and a Hearnes Fieldhouse record. Sophomore Stephen Haas finished third by one-tenth of a second in 8:23.34. In the mile, junior Charlie Koeppen finished sixth in 4:22.

Columbia memory lingers as NASA evaluates manned missions

On the first anniversary of the Columbia space shuttle disaster, NASA is fraught with questions about what happened one year ago and about the future of its manned space missions. A memorial for the crew of the space shuttle will be dedicated today at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C., by NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe. The memorial will be unveiled next to the monument for the crew of the Challenger space shuttle.
