Hoosiers compete in South Bend 'Last Chance' meet

·

The Hoosiers men's swimming and diving team will try to add four members of its squad to those already qualified to swim in the NCAA Championships this Sunday at the Indiana Open in Bloomington. The meet, which is known as a "Last Chance Meet," gives swimmers and divers who haven't already qualified for the NCAA Championships by meeting qualifying times during their conference meets one last chance to do so.

Hoosiers set for this weekend at Big Ten Tournament

·

With the regular season in the rear view mirror and future goals in sight, members of the IU wrestling team look to book their flights to St. Louis in two weeks for the NCAA Championships. First, a little business will have to be tended to, as the team will compete this weekend at the annual Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The tournament begins at 11 a.m. Saturday and concludes Sunday when the final in each weight class will be determined. Only the top seven finishers in each weight division will move on to nationals, meaning some quality grapplers will be left watching at home.

Team ready to tee off in paradise

·

This weekend, the IU men's golf team will be on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, home to numerous beaches, perpetual sunshine and 80 degree weather, making it a virtual paradise. But the last thing the Hoosiers have on their minds is an early start to spring break as they prepare for the St. Croix Collegiate Classic, which begins today and runs through Sunday.

IU advances in conference tourney

·

After having IU's hard-fought lead whittled down to only one point with five seconds left in the first half, Hoosier sophomore Cyndi Valentin quickly dribbled up the court and sent a blind shot into the air from behind the arc with no time left on the clock. The shot bounced off of the glass, went around the rim and dropped through the ring, giving the Hoosiers the four point advantage at the half. From then on, the Hoosiers never looked back.

Finally, a win

·

Better late than never, I guess. Even if the fans and media have given up, it is at least mildly refreshing to know the players haven't. Granted, Wednesday's win over Michigan has a sort of empty feeling, basically like a Geico commercial where the patient asks, "So you don't have to amputate?" and the doctor goes, "Oh, I do. But I just saved 15 percent on my car insurance." (I just made that one up, so they better send me a royalty check if they use it).

WonderLab brings 'brilliant' brains to kids

·

Cramming for a biology or political science test isn't the best way to study. Many college students find themselves struggling to retain the information and grasp the concepts at the last minute.

'Simpsons' producer to speak

·

When Mike Reiss, longtime producer of "The Simpsons" and co-creator of "The Critic," speaks at 7 p.m. tonight at the Indiana Memorial Union in Alumni Hall, he need not worry about shouts of "Boo-urns" streaming from the crowd.

A worthy cause

·

I received a letter last week requesting immediate aid for an extremely important cause. The situation is dire and requires the unlimited attention and monetary donations from humanitarians like myself. I am devoting this column to that cause in the hopes fellow IU students will be moved to open their wallets and help those in need.

'Lent' me your ears

·

We're well into the Lenten season, and while I'm not a Christian, every year I ask myself, "What will I give up this year?" At first I start out with the best intentions. This year, I planned on giving up carbonated drinks because, well, they make me belch. This worked for about six hours until I saw Kroger was having a totally sweet sale on Coke, and I bought two cases.

'Tonight Show' legend to perform at IU

·

Jazz legend Doc Severinsen of "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" fame will perform with his big band at 8 p.m. tonight at the IU Auditorium. For 30 years, from 1962 to 1992, Severinsen participated in "The Tonight Show" band, first as a lead trumpeter and later as musical director for the show. However, Severinsen's musical career started much early. Born in 1927 in the small town of Arlington, Ore., Severinsen began to take an interest in music after watching his father, Carl Severinsen.

Who IS John Kerry?

·

Tuesday, several terrorist attacks rocked Iraq and Pakistan as Shiite Muslims celebrated Ashura, a sacred religious event. Around 200 people, mostly Shiites, were killed with scores wounded in both countries. All evidence points to some radical Sunni Muslims in both attacks, although the planning of the attacks does not seem to be directly related.

Ballot errors prolong election

·

The Residence Hall Association declared Connect the winner of the RHA elections Wednesday afternoon, but the results were thrown into turmoil hours later after the discovery that a ballot box in Eigenmann Hall was opened late on election day, disenfranchising more than 100 voters, said Elections Commissioner senior Eric Hafner. Polls in Eigenmann will be open an additional three hours from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday to allow all residents a chance to cast their votes. Hafner said the Eigenmann elections coordinator mistakenly believed the ballot box would be delivered to him on election day. In fact, it had already been delivered the night before. "We missed student votes, and we are going to open up elections and let them have a chance to have their voice be heard," Hafner said.

IU Poynter ethics team wins national competition

·

What does it mean to be a U.S. citizen? Is the death penalty right? Is genetic testing on young athletes justified? These were some of the questions answered by the IU Poynter Center Ethics Bowl Team at the 10th Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Feb. 26 in Cincinnati. The team won the national competition, beating out 39 other teams that participated in the event. Sponsored by the IU Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions, they defeated Weber State University in the quarterfinals and the University of Montana in the semifinals. Later, the team defeated Wright State University in the final round.

A vision of peace

·

Margaret Steiner walked into choral class using her touch as her guide. She grasped her seat, stood for a moment while a few students surrounded her with friendly "hellos," and then committed to the squeaky fold-out chair. Students couldn't ignore the bright yellow letters on the back of her puffy blue coat which read, "Stop this war." Steiner, 51, is a prominent peace activist and strong political voice in Monroe County. She marched in Bloomington's town square last year at the beginning of the war with Iraq, and she is part of several pro-active peace organizations, including the Bloomington Peace Action Coalition.
