The search for a new vice chancellor of academic affairs and dean of faculties has begun. IU-Bloomington Interim Chancellor Ken Gros Louis appointed a 13-member search committee to find someone to fill the position.\nDean of Faculties Moya Andrews plans to retire from the position. Her term will end June 30, 2004. Applications and nominations for the position are presently being accepted for the open position.\n"Moya has done an outstanding job," said Kinesiology Professor David Koceja, chair of the search committee. "We are looking for someone to do as good of a job."\nTrustee Peter Obremskey agreed Andrews was successful as the dean of faculties.\n"She is a lady and a wonderful person that has a deep understanding of academics," Obremskey said.\nThe search committee is looking for an advocate of the faculty who is willing to dedicate time and commitment to the position.\n"This is a very important position that has to be taken seriously," Koceja said. \nBeing familiar with the campus, students and faculty is essential for the position.\n"We are looking for someone with a strong academic background and who has the ability to lead," Obremskey said. \nThe committee sent an e-mail to the faculty and staff to announce the opening of the position. \n"We are hoping to have several people apply for the job before the deadline," Koceja said.\nThe search committee will be accepting applications until April 2. After the deadline, the 13 members of the search committee will look through each potential candidate. \n"We will spend a considerable amount of time discussing the nominations," Koceja said. "We will see who we have and go from there by doing thorough interviews." \nAfter a month of sorting through each application, the committee will submit the people chosen for the position to Gros Louis. IU President Adam Herbert will make the final decision which will then be voted on by the IU board of trustees. The new dean of faculties will be in position by July 1.\nCandidates can self-apply or be nominated for the position as well.\n"Any faculty member can be nominated, and we are doing this in hopes that chairs and deans will nominate individuals who will be good for the position," Koceja said. "Nominations will help the process by getting good applicants for the position."\nThe search committee hopes to receive several applications, though it does not know how many to expect.\n"I am thinking we will have maybe 12 to 15 people attempting to get the position. We may have anywhere from eight to 20," Koceja said. "We really don't know what to expect."\nThe search committee, which has not yet set the qualifications for the position, consists of IU staff and two students, junior Chris Maher and graduate student Matthew Auer.\n"I was asked to be on the committee, and I think this position is something to take very seriously," said Maher, who is also director of the Department of Student Rights. "The next person for the position has big shoes to fill. I have nothing but praise for her."\nThe committee will continue to accept applications from any staff member who is involved with the campus until the end of next month. \n"We are looking for people who have experience, like associate deans, deans or chairpeople," Koceja said. "Their involvement with the University will help a considerable amount."\n-- Contact writer Nellie Summerfield at nsummerf@indiana.edu.
