Herbert inaugurated today

Adam Herbert will be formally inaugurated as IU's 17th president today, his 259th day in office. IU will mark the occasion with a week of inaugural celebrations highlighted by Herbert's formal investiture ceremony at 3 p.m. today in the IU Auditorium.

Closets are dark places. I thought I understood what the IU Day of Silence was all about before I picked up the yellow cards and shut up. I didn't understand. The yellow cards explain the idea. Jazz concert begins celebration

Jazz fans of all ages gathered last night at the IU Auditorium to witness a concert in honor of IU President Adam Herbert. The concert kicked off the inauguration ceremonies for Herbert, who will be officially sworn in Friday.

IU filled with supporting sounds of silence

They walked silently. The swish of a pair of corduroys and shoes striking the pavement rang out amid the silence. As the procession made its way down Third Street, drivers pressed their brakes and craned their necks in order to get a better look. At the front of the procession students carried a large banner reading, "Day of Silence."

Lil' Kim charged with perjury

NEW YORK -- Lil' Kim, the rapper known for her outrageously revealing outfits and sexually charged lyrics, was charged Wednesday with lying to a grand jury about a 2001 shootout involving her entourage. The 28-year-old star, whose real name is Kimberly Jones, turned herself in at federal court, where she was to appear before a judge.

The IU Department of Theatre and Drama announced its 2004-2005 season Wednesday with eight shows for the IU and Bloomington communities. Fall semester productions include "Dracula," by Steven Dietz, "Bat Boy, the Musical," by Keythe Farley, "The Cherry Orchard," by Anton Chekhov and "Happy Birthday Wanda June," by Kurt Vonnegut.

I must admit, saying the Midwesterners are with it is one thing, but where is our party? When they said progress is slow, they meant it. The fashion gods are wearing half smiles, not a full grin. Bloomington is moving into the future, but the progress seems to come only with the force of a Mac truck.

Expectations were high for "Peter Grimes," the final show of the 2003-2004 opera season. Between the reputation of director Colin Graham and the difficulty of the show itself, the cast had a very lofty standard to live up to.

Play a luscious mix of entertainment, shock, passion

Most plays do not open with a scene of two lesbian lovers caressing one another and talking candidly about sex. But the Bloomington Playwrights Project's new show, "Sex/Death II" is not the average showcase of the ins and outs of modern relationships, and so it's OK to bend the rules a little. Some very impressive rule-breaking was witnessed during this morbid play's two-hour run that is all at once dramatic, poignant, hysterical and shockingly violent.

Dean McKaig answers Greek houses' questions

The Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association and most presidents of Greek houses welcomed Dean of Students Richard McKaig for an hour-long question-and-answer session Wednesday night at Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Junior Sarah King, president of the Panhellenic Association, said McKaig was a first pick to answer questions from the Greek community for several reasons. "Dean McKaig is really distinguished in his field," said King. "He knows a lot about working with Greeks and the Greek communities, and he has such an incredible perspective." King said one of the main reasons for holding the question and answer was because of the upcoming Little 500 event.

Ceremony to mark transition of IUSA execs

The Feb. 26 IU Student Association elections were supposed to put an end to four parties' hard-fought campaigns. But after the winning party's disqualification, the Student Body Supreme Court named second-in-line Crimson the official winners. Now, after this controversial victory, the Crimson executives will finally take office.

Israel West Bank plan endorsed by Bush, rejected by Palestinians

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Breaking with long-standing U.S. policy Wednesday, President Bush endorsed Israel's retention of part of the West Bank in any final peace settlement with the Palestinians. In a show of support for Israel's leader that brought immediate condemnation from the Palestinians, Bush also ruled out Palestinian refugees ever returning to Israel.

Mayor breaks ground for houses

Owning a house is just one facet of the American Dream. Now, a community-wide program will make that step easier for four needy families in Bloomington. The city of Bloomington's Housing and Neighborhood Development purchased land on Ninth Street and Fairview Avenue with the intent to build housing for low to moderately-low income families.
