9-11 commission to release final report today

The National Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States published the comprehensive findings of its 20-month investigation into the Sept. 11 attacks and the government's failure to prevent them today. The 10-member panel, headed by Chairman Thomas Kean, former governor of New Jersey, examined the response of government agencies and emergency response workers to the attacks and has made recommendations to prevent the occurrence of other attacks against the United States.

File-sharing lawsuits settled

This week the Recording Industry Association of America settled lawsuits against three IU computer users who allegedly downloaded music illegally. The lawsuits were agreed upon only four months after being filed in March. RIAA spokesman Jonathan Lamy said such quick resolutions are common. "We are very eager to settle out of court," Lamy said. "The objective is not to win a lawsuit but to turn people to legitimate downloading."

A taste of sophistication

It is not as experienced as Bordeaux or as popular as Napa Valley, but Southern Indiana does have a prosperous wine region. In fact, Indiana was the first successful wine-producing state in the country, said Jim Butler of Butler Winery. The first commercial U.S. commercial wine-making operation began in Switzerland County in 1802.

Police probe of bar ongoing

Uncle Fester's and The Jungle Room are currently under investigation for 22 underage drinkers who were issued citations July 15. Indiana State Excise Sgt. Terry Bauer said the report on The Jungle Room and Uncle Fester's, on Kirkwood Avenue, has been sent to the prosecutor of the Alcohol and Tobacco Commission for review. The prosecutor will determine whether there has been a violation. The penalty could be a monetary fine and/or suspension of their liquor license.

Enrollment rate reaches 7-year low

For the first time in seven years, IU will be welcoming fewer students in the fall than projected. Vice Chancellor of Enrollment Services Don Hossler said the projected enrollment number was based on the number of new students last year. "Our last year's class was around 6,750, and that was our enrollment target for this coming year," Hossler said.

Stewart to appeal prison sentence

Martha Stewart announced Monday in an interview on "Larry King Live" that she would write a book about her current legal battles. The famous homemaker was convicted Friday by a Federal Court in Manhattan on charges of lying to investigators about the sale of her stock in the biotech company Imclone Systems Inc. Stewart sold stock she held in the company shortly before the FDA rejected a drug the company wanted to sell in the United States.

Liberal meat eater

As a staunch defender of the Atkins diet and frequent meat consumer, I have gotten into a lot of arguments. In my latest tirade, I accused a self-proclaimed liberal of acting like a conservative because of her blind devotion to orthodox views about nutrition. She rebutted that most liberals are in fact anti-Atkins, which made no sense to me.

Group to host fund-raiser at local bowling alley The Momentum Journey, Inc., will hold a Bowlarama fund-raiser at Classic Bowling Lanes Saturday. The non-profit organization, composed of three IU alumni, is "an educational, non-profit organization creating career exploration programs ... for students and adults in career transition," according to a press release.

War on terror budget underestimated

WASHINGTON -- The Pentagon faces a $12.3 billion shortfall through September for the costs of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and its worldwide effort against terrorism, congressional auditors estimated Wednesday. The amount is triple what Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, projected in April he would need to make it through September. Lawmakers of both parties said at the time that his projection seemed too low, so the projection was not a surprise.

A historical irony

Independence Day fell on a Sunday this year. That strikes this writer as being somewhat profound, given the efforts of some to make our government a theocracy. "Faith-based" federal programs, government-backed proselytizing in occupied countries and pulpit electioneering are some of the things that lead me to write such strong words.
