Like a 'Tyrannosaurus:' All muscle, no brain

·

Among the tripartite of garage-rock "the" bands, Sweden's the Hives were always the closest to the achingly-trendy bands they were compared to -- the Strokes don't sound like Television and the Vines don't sound like T. Rex or Nirvana, but the Hives do in fact sound like the Stooges.

It's 'Dynamite!'

·

This movie is dynamite! The laughs come early and don't stop until the end. What "Napoleon Dynamite" lacks is a major conflict.

Help a brother out

·

Recently, I happened to stumble across some rejected Ann Landers letters, notes that she did not deem worthy enough of her reply. Let's just say I found them on the side of the road somewhere.

SECRETLY CANADIAN REVEALS ITSELF

·

Chatting over an assortment of silverware in the dish room of the Collins cafeteria early in 1996, Bloomington residents Jonathan Cargill and Chris Swanson hatched an idea that has grown into reality: the Secretly Canadian record label, which currently has signed 26 artists.

Comedic cop caper hits the crapper on DVD

·

The inspired, yet slightly flawed, cinematic redux of lame '70s cop show "Starsky and Hutch," recently hit DVD. Sadly, the disc doesn't stack up to the manic antics of this comedic cop caper.

Welcome to the 'Jungle'

·

They're almost like a Wu-Tang Clan of the suburbs. Athletic Mic League, a tight group of seven from Ann Arbor, Mich., have released its follow-up to 2002's Sweats and Kicks.

The rebirth of the modern action hero

·

"The Bourne Supremacy" picks up where "The Bourne Identity" left off -- both are action flicks in which brains best brawn. Based on a series of novels by late author Robert Ludlum, these two movies have infused the languishing spy genre with grit, intelligence and style -- elements long-since bungled by the Bond franchise.

'De-Lovely' de-lightful, but depressing

·

With a flawless, let's-nominate-him-for-something performance by Kevin Kline, and an ingenious framing structure which features the best songs of composer Cole Porter, I have to ask why this movie had to make me so damned depressed.
